- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I join Senator Norris in congratulating all those involved in Dublin Pride last weekend. Unfortunately, I could not attend, but was it not wonderful to see members of An Garda Síochána, the PSNI and Civil Service and public service unions marching? I pay tribute to Inspector Paul Franey of An Garda Síochána.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: He has long been an advocate of, and champion for, equality within An Garda Síochána that has sometimes been a very lonely place for him and other members of G Force.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I also thank the Minister, Deputy Zappone, for walking at the WorldPride event in New York last Sunday. Fifty years on from the Stonewall riots, we have made huge progress in our journey towards equality for members of the LGBTQ+ community. I spoke at an event at Apple last Friday as part of Pride month. I will say again that, while the father of the House and I may not agree on some...

Jerry Buttimer: Many people, including Senator Norris, Arthur Leahy in Cork, Kieran Rose and Chris Robinson, deserve our praise and thanks.

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the Cathaoirleach and the Ceann Comhairle for their support in affirming our efforts to have the rainbow flag flown over Leinster House on Saturday as part of the Pride festival. I also thank them for supporting members of Oireachtas staff in the formation and creation of an LGBT group.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I am surprised that Senator Murnane O'Connor asked why Carlow was not included as a rent pressure zone. First, it did not meet the criteria as set out in legislation. Second, it was not a political choice and the Minister was not involved in it. The decision was made on the basis of factual data.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: The necessary conditions did not arise in the case of Carlow. The legal criteria were applied without ministerial interference.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: The Senator voted for the Bill when it came before the House. If she wants to have a real and honest debate about rent pressure zones, we can have such a debate. I ask her not to come in here throwing political points around when she knows the full facts better than most.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: Senator Devine raised the important issue of the public consultation process in respect of the Phoenix Park, which is a park of international renown. It is not just for the people of Dublin. It is important to get the consultation right. I cannot promise that the Minister will come to the House before the summer recess. If the Senator raises this issue as a Commencement matter, she might...

Jerry Buttimer: To give clarity to Members regarding the Order of Business, I propose that No. 4, statements on the EU-Mercosur trade agreement be taken at 3 p.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., not 4.30 p.m. The contributions of group spokespersons shall not exceed eight minutes, time may be shared and the Minister will be given no less than five minutes to reply at the conclusion of the statements.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I thank the 18 Members for their contributions to the Order of Business. Senators Horkan, Devine and Warfield raised the issue of the living wage. The concerns raised are important. Sometimes members of the Sinn Féin Party believe they have a capacity for empathy and a capacity for speaking for people. Many of us have articulated viewpoints in favour of improving the living...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I said that we should not have a phoney debate. The Senator can put her videos up if she wants to.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I know those in the Sinn Féin Party are good at putting up videos of people in the Seanad. Let us have a real debate, not a phoney one. I accept that we face challenges. As Senator Horkan rightly said, the cost of housing is driving up the cost of living. To go back to the report, however, the cost of food, household items, communications, IT and income tax have reduced; they are all...

Jerry Buttimer: There was no mention of that at all. There is one transferable speech. It must come down from west Belfast, down to the bottom of O'Connell Street, and then in here.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (3 Jul 2019)
Jerry Buttimer: I am sorry, I meant the top of O'Connell Street. Sinn Féin was the party that voted against the increase in the minimum wage.
