Joe Flaherty: In relation to the investigation the Department has begun regarding the breakdown of thoroughbred and sport horse stock, can it provide a breakdown on the passports that were discovered in that plant? Are we looking at 50% or-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Welfare, Treatment and Traceability of Horses: Discussion (26 Jun 2024)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Welfare, Treatment and Traceability of Horses: Discussion (26 Jun 2024)

Joe Flaherty: In the limited time remaining, I have two questions for Mr. Sheahan. When does he believe there will be an appropriate and approved Department equine slaughter facility available in Ireland? In the absence of such a facility, what additional safeguards, if any, have been put in place regarding equine transportation for slaughter?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Welfare, Treatment and Traceability of Horses: Discussion (26 Jun 2024)

Tackling All Forms of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: Statements (3 Jul 2024)

Joe Flaherty: There have been two cases before the courts in recent weeks which have brought the issue of gender-based violence into focus once more and have shone a light on our ineffectiveness in dealing with the issue and supporting victims. The sad reality is that while both cases were high-profile, in the weeks and days that followed those acts of violence and degradation, several other women have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Statement of Strategy 2023-2026: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (3 Jul 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I thank the officials for coming in. The report looks great. There is plenty of colour. It looks brilliant. However, it is amazing that there was no mention of horse welfare in the Department's opening statement, given everything that has happened. On a cursory glance, it does not specifically mention horses or horse welfare, though it mentions animal welfare. Until the Chair mentioned...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Statement of Strategy 2023-2026: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (3 Jul 2024)

Joe Flaherty: I know, but the bit I had is gone now and it has gone very grey. The latest reports show that planting reached 716 ha this week, or not even 9% of the annual target, halfway through the year. That underperformance highlights the issues. The new forestry programme looks great. There is plenty of colour and it looks fantastic. The website is lovely, but trees are being planted in the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Statement of Strategy 2023-2026: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (3 Jul 2024)

Joe Flaherty: Not the Government, the programme.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Statement of Strategy 2023-2026: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (3 Jul 2024)

Joe Flaherty: Specifically the forestry programme. It was a blue chip launch for the Department. It is clearly not garnering momentum and there are issues with it. At some stage, one will have to say it is not working.
