Seanad: Respite Care Services (29 Jun 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I reply on behalf of my colleague, the Minister for Health and Children. I thank Senator Donohoe for raising this matter and I am pleased to take this opportunity to outline the position relating to the 2010 funding for the Daughters of Charity services at St. Vincent's Centre, Navan Road, Dublin 7. The Government is very much aware of the valuable contribution the voluntary sector,...

Conor Lenihan: The Government is committed to promoting partnership on the island through the North/South Ministerial Council and the other North/South institutions to deepen economic, social and cultural relations between both parts of the island. In the communications sector, we have jointly promoted Project Kelvin, which I will describe in more detail presently. EU rules regulating the...

I thank the Senator for raising the matter as it affords me the opportunity to outline to the House the process being utilised to ensure there will be adequate accommodation in schools at primary and post-primary level in all parts of the country. The forward planning...

Seanad: Schools Building Projects (29 Jun 2010)

Conor Lenihan: As indicated in my reply, this is a commercially sensitive matter. If negotiations are at an advanced stage and clearly sites are being looked at and hopefully being identified in that process, one has to be careful. The Senator will know that some people are more than willing to make hay.

Seanad: Schools Building Projects (29 Jun 2010)

Conor Lenihan: It might be as well for the Senator to write directly to the Tánaiste on that matter. I suggest she might also write to the local authority which is deeply involved in the discussions.

Written Answers — Fisheries Protection: Fisheries Protection (30 Jun 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I propose to take Question Nos. 242 and 243 together. Responsibility for the species referred to by the Deputy lies with the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, under the Wildlife Acts 1976–2000 through the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). The Fisheries Boards are already actively engaged in seeking measures to control predator species, where appropriate,...

Written Answers — Offshore Exploration: Offshore Exploration (1 Jul 2010)

Conor Lenihan: The Corrib gas field is estimated to contain approximately 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. Actual reserves, which are not expected to vary greatly from this figure, will not be known precisely until late in the field's lifetime after a considerable amount of historical production data has been collected. The initial volumetric studies to determine the reserves of gas in the...

Written Answers — River Works: River Works (6 Jul 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I have previously advised the House that the onus under the Fisheries Acts rests with Fermoy Town Council, as owners of the weir, to maintain and repair the structure. The Department is not in a position to fund the necessary repairs. This is a matter for the Town Council.

Written Answers — Offshore Exploration: Offshore Exploration (7 Jul 2010)

Conor Lenihan: Since the start of this year I have awarded two petroleum exploration authorisations, both to Providence Resources Ltd. The first was for a two year Licensing Option in respect of acreage in the Celtic Sea and the second was for a non-exclusive Petroleum Prospecting Licence. Written Answers — Energy Resources: Energy Resources (8 Jul 2010)

Conor Lenihan: During the past year there has been renewed interest in targeting the natural gas resource potential of the onshore Northwest Carboniferous Basin, which had been identified in earlier exploration, but not deemed commercial at that time. In March of this year, I announced a competition for Onshore Licensing Options over the Northwest Carboniferous Basin and also the Clare Basin. The acreage...

State Examinations (29 Sep 2010)

Conor Lenihan: The report of the innovation task force recommended that bonus points for higher level mathematics in the leaving certificate should be announced now, for implementation from 2012 onwards, so that students beginning their leaving certificate can make informed decisions about subject and level choice. I indicated my own view at the time of the desirability of sending a clear signal to second...

State Examinations (29 Sep 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I appreciate the Deputy's support and enthusiasm on this subject. The Deputy will, if she is fair, acknowledge that I have been, in my capacity as Minister of State with responsibility for science, technology and innovation, equally enthusiastic about this proposal. I am also Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills. The institutes of technology are in favour of the...

State Examinations (29 Sep 2010)

Conor Lenihan: I fully agree with Deputy Clune. I have been no pussy cat in terms of my dealings on this matter. I was recently criticised for making in an article in the Evening Herald the same points now being made by the Deputy. The academics need to get off the fence on this issue and go with Government policy.

State Examinations (29 Sep 2010)

Conor Lenihan: The bottom line is that we must respect academic freedom.

State Examinations (29 Sep 2010)

Conor Lenihan: An integral aspect of our university system is the concept of academic freedom in terms of how they operate. I am actively engaged in the marketplace, trading, pushing and cajoling. I met recently with Mr. Jimmy Browne of NUI Galway when I again bearded him on this subject.
