Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: He used the phrase and implied as much.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The Senator knows well that we operate by consensus, in the main. If the Senator analysed the give and take in this House, he would say that the Leader lost more than he has won.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: It was not I who briefed journalists in the canteen or around these Houses, or who apprised them of the situation. I do not suggest it was Senator McDowell either. When a journalist phones me to say he or she has been told something by a Member of the House, I wonder how that journalist has found out.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: There are two simple answers to Senator McDowell's question. First, the said journalist who wrote the piece read the schedule which stated "published by the Houses of the Oireachtas". Second, she was apprised of the situation by a Member of the House. I can assure the Senator that I did not speak to any journalist about the sitting arrangements of the House until I got a phone call.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The phone call told me about the article which was published after that. I received phone calls from journalists, to which I responded, after which I was informed of what they had been told by Members of the House.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: It seems that the motto of Senator McDowell is, "We shall not be changed". I have a very simple view.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: When we changed how posts of responsibility in education were rewarded, we moved away from the old network of experience and the longevity of a person's service, the old club, to one where there was an interview and where the skill sets and a person's attributes, experience and qualifications were what mattered for him or her to be appointed to a position. Why are we afraid of that? Are we...

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The Senator is wrong.

Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: This is important. The schedule of the Houses of the Oireachtas is published and I want Senators to understand my bona fides in this matter.I received a phonecall from a journalist who had been speaking to Members of the House and I responded to his request. I did not phone the journalist. I did not brief any journalist. I would never brief---

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The Order of Business is No. 1, Industrial Relations (Amendment) Bill 2018 – Second Stage, to be taken at 12.45 p.m. and to adjourn at 1.45 p.m., if not previously concluded, with the contributions of spokespersons not to exceed eight minutes and those of all other Senators not to exceed five minutes; No. 2, Coroners (Amendment) Bill 2018 – Second Stage, to be taken at 1.45 p.m....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I look forward to the Acting Chairman enforcing that.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Senator Norris should have some manners and listen to what Senator Bacik is saying.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank the 14 Members of the House for their contributions to the Order of Business. I dtús báire Senator Ardagh raised the issue of the national maternity hospital. With regard to the maternity strategy, I alert the Seanadóir to the fact that we have a national maternity strategy up and running. Significant developments in the delivery of the national maternity strategy...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: The points he made regarding "A New Heart for Dublin" are very relevant. These points could also apply to Cork or Galway. I very much regret that we did not choose to have a directly-elected mayor for Cork. I believe that a directly-elected mayor in Cork, Galway, Limerick or Dublin could transform and drive change in the city. It is regrettable that the leader of the Fianna Fáil...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: Such campaigning would have served the people of Cork better than playing petty partisan politics. The point the Senator makes is highly relevant to the future of our capital city. Senator Norris, who is not present but that is not my problem, raised the issue of-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: -----the use of credit cards in the Dublin Port Company. It is an independent company and the article is based on a leak. There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing or misallocation. The expenses were approved. I am not condoning the expenditure but, in the absence of the person in question, we must be careful about what we say and about how we present issues. As the Senator will know,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jun 2019)

Jerry Buttimer: It is not a matter for this House. The decision by the Minister is based upon advice given to him by the military, as the Senator knows quite well. Some 12 rangers are going and they will be working with a German contingent on intelligence gathering patrols. If the Senator wishes to raise any particular matters, I suggest it may be more expeditious to do so through a Commencement matter...
