- Social Services and Support: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (15 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I am grateful for the opportunity to speak to the Technical Group's motion. Like many others, I have been following the very sad news from Greece, in particular, the state of turmoil, the riots and the state of the parliament. Unfortunately, over the weekend, we saw the sad pictures of older people not being able to withdraw money from ATM machines and queueing for food parcels. Dioceses...
- Social Services and Support: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (15 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: The Deputy then stands up to say we are in a better condition in this country than we ever were and that we should be giving people more money. That is what happened in Greece. People did not realise things did not come for nothing and that they have to be paid for.
- Social Services and Support: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (15 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: Older citizens are the backbone of our community and deserve to be supported with the very best care we can provide. As other speakers said, the country has an ageing population. There will be approximately 850,000 people over the age of 65 years by 2026. This will place huge burdens and pressures on our services. Only by laying the foundation now as a stable Government can we in any way...
- Topical Issue Debate: Home Help Service Provision (16 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I thank the Minister for being in the Chamber to take this Topical Issue matter. I know and understand only too well the needs of older people in our families and communities. As I said last night, our senior citizens have been the backbone of our communities and they deserve our support when they get older. Therefore, I wish to highlight the issue of home help and the need to support...
- Topical Issue Debate: Home Help Service Provision (16 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: There is nothing I disagree with in that. I am all about promoting equality and safety. I know the Minister understands the challenges facing us, especially those facing elderly people. Our elderly population is increasing as well. I was at the Joint Committee on Health and Children this morning where we met representatives from the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The lady who spoke,...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Delays in the Registration of Nurses and Midwives: Discussion (16 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I thank the delegates for their presentation. I pay tribute to the midwives, nurses and other staff in the maternity hospitals across the country. They do a wonderful job and sometimes do not receive half the recognition they deserve. What further information is required to be submitted by the 55 applicants? Is there a deadline before people have to return the relevant information? How...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Services for People with Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease: Discussion (16 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I missed the presentations but heard Dr. Crowe on the radio this morning. Dr. Crowe asked the committee members to put themselves in the shoes of one of her service users. I have been in those shoes, along with my brothers. My mam was diagnosed with dementia when she was 89. It was heart-breaking for the family but devastating for my mam who was very active up to three months before she...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Services for People with Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease: Discussion (16 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: It is called, "Thinking outside the box".
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Irish Blood Transfusion Service: Chairperson Designate (17 Jul 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I do not really, as I did not know if I would be coming here. I am not very good when it comes to blood and I am very bad with needles. Talking about blood is not my forte, but two things jump off the page, one of which is the major challenge presented by the decline in blood products in the past few years and the use of red cells and platelets. What is the reason for this? I do not...
- Marriage Bill 2015: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Sep 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I welcome the opportunity to contribute on the Bill. While it is technical in nature, it is significant and means much to many people. Last May's marriage equality referendum was a defining moment in the history of our country. It brought people together in a way that we had not seen in many years. Overall, there was a positive atmosphere across every party in this Chamber, testament to...

Catherine Byrne: Deputy Troy has the floor.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: National Maternity Services and Infrastructure: Discussion (24 Sep 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I thank the witnesses for their in-depth statements. The report covered a wide range of issues and I found parts of it very bleak and challenging. The witnesses spoke about a well-educated staff and people being enticed to work outside the country. Some staff have told me they have not only left because they want to go away but because they want to become consultants and find it very hard...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Babies Born to Mothers with Substance Abuse Issues: Discussion (24 Sep 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I thank the Chairman and committee staff for organising this meeting. I have been concerned about this issue for some time and am delighted to have had the opportunity to hear expert views on it and to hear the witnesses speak about it with such passion. I live very close to the Coombe hospital which is in the area I represent and I meet mothers regularly who I know to have substance abuse...

Catherine Byrne: Can I continue, Chairman?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Babies Born to Mothers with Substance Abuse Issues: Discussion (24 Sep 2015)
Catherine Byrne: I wish to refer to the breakdown of monthly clinics and client numbers for 2014 in the report. In terms of both antenatal and postnatal clinics, why do the numbers attending the postnatal clinics drop so much? Is it just that the mothers do not come back?
