- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: That is a "Yes".
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I thank Ms Cronin. I want to bring the debate back to Lyric FM, because like so many others who have spoken, I am completely perplexed. The staff in Lyric FM in Limerick are completely perplexed as to how much savings can be made, and the fact that to date - despite several people asking - we have received no answer in relation to the possible cost savings, which only adds to our...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Can I just drill into that cost? Is it true that RTÉ Lyric FM has had zero central marketing budget while resources have been ploughed into other RTÉ stations?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Surely Ms Forbes would know that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Ms Forbes has made decisions on Limerick, but she is telling the committee that she does not know if there has been any marketing budget for the station over the last number of years. Is she serious?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Between 2008 and 2018 the moneys received by RTÉ form the licence fee fell by 6%. In the same period, the licence attribution fee to RTÉ Lyric FM fell by 26%. Why was the arts and culture funding so disproportionately cut?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: That is not what I am asking.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Given the overwhelming levels of support for RTÉ Lyric FM shown over the past three months, and we would all acknowledge that, why is RTÉ's response to that to close the station's production facilities in Limerick and so to strip its service.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Given the cost differentials between Limerick and Dublin, was it considered to move staff from Dublin to Limerick rather than to close Limerick, which we acknowledge is responsible for 80% of Lyric? It is a devastating decision which needs to be reversed. Was any consideration given to decentralising, which would have been much more in line with Government planning?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Future Funding of Public Service Broadcasting: Discussion (10 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Was any consideration given to decentralising RTÉ further, with more jobs going to Limerick rather than closing down a very vibrant and essential part of Limerick culture?
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I looked at some British news the other day. One of the starkest statistics I have seen is that there are now significantly more food banks in the UK than there are branches of McDonalds. There are 2,000 food banks as opposed to 1,249 branches of McDonalds. This reflects how far backwards British society has gone over the past 30 years. I grew up in London and am proud to be a member of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: -----reject Thatcherism, and reject the right-wing economics that have destroyed society over there.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Probably.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: Well said.
- Seanad: Social Welfare (No. 2) Bill 2019: Report and Final Stages (17 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I second the amendment.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I want to thank everybody for their patience and perseverance during the year, particularly the staff, the Leas-Chathaoirleach, the Leader and the Cathaoirleach, and to wish everybody a happy Christmas. At the risk of sounding like Boris Johnson, can we get something done for the secretarial assistants? It is great that everyone signed the motion and it is fantastic we got the support. The...
- Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Report and Final Stages (18 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister. This is one of the most disappointing moments in my three and a half years working here. It is only a couple of weeks ago that we had widespread support for this amendment. The amendment stated: "... Schools shall ... provide to both parents and the Department of Education information relating to voluntary contributions, inclusive of the total monies collected...
- Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Report and Final Stages (18 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: The Minister has not started that conversation.
- Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Report and Final Stages (18 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I second the amendment.
- Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Report and Final Stages (18 Dec 2019)
Paul Gavan: I support both these amendments, which are commonsense and empowering for the ombudsman. A reforming Minister would support these amendments.
