- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Covid-19 Pandemic (15 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I tabled a parliamentary question on this as well. It states, "Separately, the Minister for Health has stated that he believes that a review of the management and impact of COVID-19 in nursing homes is warranted". The Minister of State, Deputy Rabbitte, mentioned in her response the €145 million provided under the temporary assistance payment scheme. Some €145 million is...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I echo that absolutely.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Decongregation of Mental Health Settings: Mental Health Commission (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I thank the representatives of the commission for coming in. Sometimes there is an advantage to being last. I will cut straight to the chase because this has been a bugbear of mine since the Minister rang me regarding the closure. I will specifically use the example of Owenacurra because I am from Midleton and that is the local centre. This is my first question and I will be blunt. I have...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Decongregation of Mental Health Settings: Mental Health Commission (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: Dr. Finnerty said that the commission cannot change people's opinions of the reports. I am going to ask the witnesses straight. Will the commission correct the record and get the HSE to take back its claim that it is the Mental Health Commission's fault that it has been forced to close the centre? The witnesses said that the HSE's decision was based on its opinion. Will the commission...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Decongregation of Mental Health Settings: Mental Health Commission (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: He is using the commission's report as an excuse. The report stated the building at the centre was not fit for purpose. Michael Fitzgerald, the Cork Kerry Community Healthcare chief officer, is using the commission as an excuse. Is it possible for the commission to approach the HSE and say it is misinformation and an untruth? It is taking the information from the report out of context and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Decongregation of Mental Health Settings: Mental Health Commission (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: Just to go back, I asked a question earlier about services in Cork overall and rating them on a scale of one to ten, with ten being best practice and one being crap. How would Mr Farrelly rate Cork?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Decongregation of Mental Health Settings: Mental Health Commission (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: That is okay. I thank the Chair.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Decongregation of Mental Health Settings: Mental Health Commission (8 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I will not touch on correcting the record. I will actually write and ask that it be done. As Deputy Hourigan said, the HSE uses these reports as excuses. The first question I asked was whether the Mental Health Commission has come under pressure from any external entities to tone down any of its services.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I wish everyone a good morning. It is an absolute pleasure and honour to be here. I was shocked by the line in Carmel's opening statement that said, "someone who cannot speak is regarded as not having intelligence". She followed this by saying: "This is a common perception held by psychologists, speech and other therapists, teachers [and] other professionals." She is actually meeting...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: Yes, so they have done something to provide assistance anyway. It is not a matter of questions. It just mind-blowing that I am sitting across from a 21 year old.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: The Senator can.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: We are staring the evidence in the face this morning and I cannot understand why people cannot be supported when something is working. That makes me very frustrated. As I said, we must do something to progress this. No family should be out there begging for something that should be their natural right in order that they can progress in life.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Assistive Technology: Ms Carmel Ryan and Mr. Fiacre Ryan (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I am sure that there enough laptops and iPads being recycled every year that were never used and that never went onto a shelf in a shop. I can guarantee that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Employment: Discussion (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: I will try to be brief. It is great to have the witnesses before us and to have bodies that represent so many people. Many of us have discussed the reasonable accommodation passport scheme. It is an amazing initiative that, it is be hoped, will grow. I noticed, however, between the two sets of representatives, that the issue of awareness and information came up on numerous occasions,...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy and Employment: Discussion (13 Dec 2022)
Pat Buckley: On the Kerry project, there is a fine Cork name over there so I hope they will still work with a Cork woman.
- Capacity in the Health Services: Motion [Private Members] (18 Jan 2023)
Pat Buckley: It has been said here tonight that there are 73 patients on trolleys in CUH, with 13 waiting for beds in the Mercy Hospital. What we are facing at the moment is not surprising but it is unprecedented. I am glad the Minister and the Ministers of State are present. The Government is closing a 22-bed mental health respite centre in Midleton, the Owenacurra centre, in the middle of a health...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir: Save St. Brigid’s Action Group (19 Jan 2023)
Pat Buckley: I welcome all the witnesses and the people in the Gallery. I am known for being blunt. The big problem we have here - let us cut straight to the chase - is that there is absolutely no oversight in the HSE. We in this committee have met a number of times to discuss other centres, and the exact same excuse comes up, that is, buildings are not fit for purpose, and instead of investing in...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir: Save St. Brigid’s Action Group (19 Jan 2023)
Pat Buckley: When St. Brigid's was being closed, was there any consultation with family members or anything like that? Our guests are shaking their heads. Did they get anything in writing that outlined the rationale for the closure of the building?
- Committee on Public Petitions: Public Petition on St. Brigid’s Hospital, Carrick-on-Suir: Save St. Brigid’s Action Group (19 Jan 2023)
Pat Buckley: This is a very serious situation and it is not the only such case in the country. I had to write this down because I could not believe it. You cannot be fat to go into St. Brigid's. It is as simple as that. That is the issue here. If that is the issue of non-compliance, that is ludicrous.
