Kieran O'Donnell: We will have to come back to the issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Irish Aviation Authority: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Kieran O'Donnell: We will have to come back to this issue. It would appear that there is an absence of information and a lacuna in this whole area. It is an issue that we will come back to. It is separate from our discussions on Ms Hynes's appointment today. We wish her well in the role and thank her for the work she has done to date. We look forward to the transition of the IAA, with the separation and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Kieran O'Donnell: Are any members looking to come in? I have a few brief questions. I wish Ms Bolger well in her new role. In a former life, I was a self-employed chartered accountant. I dealt with many people who were setting up a business. If they came to me, we looked for core things in any town and village, namely a national school, a church, a bank and a post office. If there was a post office in a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Kieran O'Donnell: We might look at the review of banking services to make certain that the terms of reference will consider the role of post offices. They are already playing a role in that they provide banking services. We should consider an enhanced role. Having enhanced services would enable An Post to retain and deliver its core services as well.

Kieran O'Donnell: I thank Ms Bolger.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: An Post: Chairperson Designate (24 Nov 2021)

Kieran O'Donnell: When Ms Bolger settles down in the role, we would love to have her back, along with her management team, to discuss a comprehensive future for An Post. That is vital. I would not like to see any slippage in terms of securing the future of An Post. Obviously, this concerns the postmasters, their employees and more particularly the people they serve on the ground. A letter and transcript of...

This morning's meeting is to consider the Supplementary Estimates for the public services in respect of programme A of Vote 29 - Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, and Vote 31 - Department of Transport. Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (Supplementary)
Vote 31 - Transport (Supplementary)
(25 Nov 2021)

Kieran O'Donnell: No, we are not in any way questioning the operational matter. The RSA operates it. However, we could be at cross purposes here. It is something that we will take up with the RSA, but if the issue here is that the RSA has inadequate funding to retain these 34 driving instructors, the committee is duty bound to ask. If it is a funding issue, I assume discussions are ongoing between the RSA...
