Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2021: Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (29 Jun 2023)

James O'Connor: Okay. That answers that and is satisfactory. Regarding the questions asked by Deputy Catherine Murphy about the early retirement scheme introduced in May 2021, Mr. O'Loughlin said three employees in the organisation successfully applied for it. Is that correct?

James O'Connor: Okay. Turning to Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and we have the assistant secretary with us, I just wish to ask about the matter that has arisen that we are not able to discuss because we cannot get the information on it. When was the Department informed of this irregularity? What has happened to try to address it sufficiently?

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ: Discussion (29 Jun 2023)

James O'Connor: We all stand in solidarity with the ordinary workers in RTÉ, recognising how disappointed and let down they all are. That has been acknowledged here today but, ultimately, this is about responsibility and accountability. That is what we need to get to the bottom of today. There are a number of points in the opening statement by the chairperson that contradict what has gone on within...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ: Discussion (29 Jun 2023)

James O'Connor: It is not enough to consider doing it. The figures need to be published in full. Nothing else, frankly, is going to rebuild the public's trust in Ms Ní Raghallaigh's organisation. Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ: Discussion (29 Jun 2023)

James O'Connor: We welcome that decision. We have arrived at this position as a consequence of the €350,000 in additional non-declared payment made to Mr. Tubridy between 2017 and 2022. We need to get to the bottom of how those arrangements were negotiated. Who were the participants in those negotiations? I understand these decisions were taken by the director general. Are there other members of...

Public Accounts Committee: Appropriation and Expenditure of Public Moneys by RTÉ: Discussion (29 Jun 2023)
