Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: It was highlighted last year with the Minister.

Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Carey, for coming here this evening. I am delighted that he has become a Minister of State. I know him for a long time and he is a very serious politician. Previously, he was a múinteoir.

Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: I know how he is regarded by many young people who he taught in his area and how he inspired them to go on to achieve an education and improve their prospects. They were able to cut through the class barrier. The issue of alcohol interests me. I am a member of the Joint Committee on Health and Children and when I was appointed to the committee, I studied its documents. I have taken up the...

Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: I did not know that because he is not wearing his badge. We have an epidemic of suicide in the country and alcohol is a major factor in that. It is within our power to implement the recommendations, as listed by the Minister of State in his speech. We should increase the price of alcohol and regulate the opening of new locations for the sale of alcohol. The Government has succeeded with...

Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: Is the Senator dreaming? What world does she live in?

Seanad: Substance Abuse: Motion (19 Dec 2007)

Mary White: The attitude to drink driving has changed here. The attitude to binge drinking has not changed, but people now feel it is immoral to drink and drive. I defy the Senator to identify anyone who does not realise it is immoral to drink and drive. In my eyes, that is success. Senators on the opposite side of the House should pay more attention to detail before they speak.

Seanad: Social and Affordable Housing (30 Jan 2008)

Mary White: Part V of the Planning and Development Acts 2000 to 2006 was seen as innovative legislation because it sought to ensure that new housing developments made provision for people who could not afford to purchase a home at current market prices. Part V stipulated that 20% of all new housing developments must be ring-fenced for social and affordable housing. It is, therefore, despicable that...

Seanad: Social and Affordable Housing (30 Jan 2008)

Mary White: Well done.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2008)

Mary White: That has never been the case. We never heard the term "decommissioning" until John Bruton became Taoiseach.

Seanad: Order of Business (31 Jan 2008)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Climate Change and Energy Security: Statements (31 Jan 2008)

Mary White: It is not true.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: Last night I am sure everybody in the Chamber realised that Senator John McCain, aged 71, consolidated his frontline position to be the Republican Party candidate in the forthcoming US presidential election. If he becomes President next year Senator McCain will take up his position at the age of 72.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: If Senator McCain were in Ireland he would not be allowed to serve on a jury. People over the age of 70 cannot sit on a jury. Why should our older citizens be deprived of giving their experience on a jury?

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: If Senator McCain served two terms, he could be President at the age of 78. I presume all Senators support me on this issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: When Dr. Patricia Comer, who practices as a GP in Haddington Road in Dublin, turned 70 two years ago, she was told she could no longer treat her public patients but could continue to treat her private patients indefinitely.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: I call on the HSE to urgently review its contract and allow GPs to continue to treat their public as well as private patients after the age of 70. The Cathaoirleach will remember I requested it to do so two years ago,

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: We have a severe shortage of GPs in Ireland. Why are we taking this big tranche of people out when they reach the age of 70?

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: Last year I made a valiant effort to get the issue of retirement at 65 into the programme for Government. I was thrilled and honoured that I succeeded.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (6 Feb 2008)

Mary White: The joint programme for Government states: "Those reaching retirement age should be allowed to retire if they wish, but those who would prefer to stay at work should be facilitated in doing so". I want the Government to come forward urgently to implement legislation to give people the choice.
