- Water Quality. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: I bring the Minister's attention to the recent EPA report on the provision and quality of drinking water in Ireland for 2006 and 2007. As the Minister will know, the report indicated that 36% of our drinking water supplies require detailed profiling to determine whether the supply must be replaced or upgraded, or where operational practices must be improved to ensure the water supply to the...
- Water Quality. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: It published a list of 339 sites throughout Ireland which were placed on a remedial action list and 28 from 34 local authorities have problems with the water supply, with elements, such as e.coli, being found, which are unsatisfactory as far as the EPA is concerned.
- Water Quality. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: There is a lack of treatment for cryptosporidium. It is very well having so much money in the national development plan but what about now? The EPA has indicated its standards are the minimum and they should not be left to be achieved in a few years. They should be achieved now and it is unsatisfactory that our water supply is in such a condition. What will the Minister do about this?
- Water Quality. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: It is welcome that the Minister is providing more staff to the EPA but the problem is with local authorities. The EPA found that 14 local authorities were not doing their duty in terms of monitoring water supplies. They do not have enough staff or expertise for that. When he was Minister, Deputy Dick Roche told the then mayor of Galway, Niall à Brolcháin, that money was available but he...
- Environmental Policy. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: Does the Minister not think the 3% target is a con job on people? He set out in his carbon budget that the bulk of our reductions would be achieved by the purchase of carbon credits. We will buy pieces of paper to achieve our carbon reductions. The rest was achieved by forests that already exist. That is what the Minister set out for 2008-12 in his carbon report the day after the budget....

- Environmental Policy. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: I was very curious about that survey and I wrote to the Minister's Department a couple of weeks ago for a copy to see what questions were asked, the findings and so on. I find it difficult to believe that 81% of people are in favour of carbon taxes.
- Environmental Policy. (22 Apr 2008)
Joanna Tuffy: There were recent news reports about rising food costs and that people are struggling with increased petrol costs and so on. Why should people want to pay more for their petrol or gas? I find this incredible. I notice the report stated that people were in favour of tough measures, such as carbon taxes. These are basically tough measures affecting individuals, which will add to inflation...
