Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry: Bord Bia, ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: I thank Mr. Cotter for his presentation. It looked at the world market, potential markets and the growth involved for Irish dairy products. My question is related to the question asked by Deputy Ó Cuív. I do not come from a farming background but I listened to the discussions in this committee and in the Chamber and saw the newspaper reports throughout last year about how the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: I am okay, Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: Yes. I apologise for missing the presentations but I had to briefly step out. Two questions came to mind as I was listening to the contributions. Much of the discussion seems to be around our being able to command a premium for our product being green, so to speak, and being of a good and higher quality. Is any premium being delivered in terms of price for farmers, if our product is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: We have been down that road already. Does most of our milk not come from animals that have been grass-fed?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: Can the premium not come through to the farmer when we already have all of that in place?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: The dairy farmer who produces the milk to make the butter should get the premium.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: Is that measured on volume?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: I do not think that many of the producers in Ireland would be on the right-hand side of that graph.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: I understand that Ireland is grass rich. Is that not the case? The far right-hand side of the graph is based on cattle that are housed all year round and fed grain. How much more can we squeeze out of it without consolidation and rationalisation within farms, reducing the number of farmers and making farms bigger?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry (Resumed): ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: They could take it politically as well. There is a subtle difference.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Promoting Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities: Discussion (17 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: If this committee could implement the report, we would be flying. Unfortunately, we have to rely on the Government to take on board the recommendations and implement them. On the proposals around heritage licences, I agree that these should be progressed. One of the responses from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine was that the national inshore fishermen's forum was the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Promoting Sustainable Rural Coastal and Island Communities: Discussion (17 Feb 2015)

Thomas Pringle: When we were drafting the report, the South-West Fisheries Local Action Group, FLAG, was only getting up and running, and we had no input into that body. I was interested in what Mr. Walsh said in respect of the potential of FLAG to get partnership working and up and running and so on. How is the group developing? Is there much focus on the islands? How is that work progressing at the moment?
