- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I am running out of time. This will be my last question. Is there a change in policy that-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I use the train every week from Sligo to Dublin. It has been hailed as the longest route in the country. There has been ambiguity about this - when is the catering trolley returning to the Sligo-Dublin route?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Why is not prioritised for Sligo as the longest route? We have sent petitions. There is nothing else we can do to show how much it is needed. It has become a public safety issue because people do not have access to water. It is indicative of the lack of infrastructure in the north west. People could be leaving the top of Donegal to get to treatment services in Dublin and because they are...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I have been raising this for a long time. We get a vague response all the time. I am not trying to have a go but as someone who represents an area with people accessing hospital appointments regularly in Dublin because we do not have the facilities in Sligo University Hospital, we need a concrete answer on when there will be access to some kind of beverages or basic facilities on our train....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I appreciate that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I appreciate that but when I looked at this briefing document, there was no reference to anything in the north west. We have heard all about Dublin. There is the Luas in Cork and there will be BusConnects in Galway but there is no commitment for Sligo.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Sligo is an urban route.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: No offence but there is a difference between Tipperary and Sligo. Sligo is seen as an urban centre. It functions as a city, so it comes under urban transport.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Urban.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I will not speak about the budget as I will wait until the statements later today. I want to put a different issue before the Leader. The long-awaited occupied territories Bill will be coming before the Dáil for a vote soon. We know the foreign affairs joint committee strongly recommends progressing the Bill and that the prohibition of imports from the Palestinian occupied territories...
- Seanad: Budget 2026 (Finance): Statements (7 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: This is my first year as an elected representative in the Houses of the Oireachtas and it is my first time hearing the budget. All that kept going through my head when I was sitting in the Dáil listening to the budget was the song “Here we go again". This budget is yet another in a long list of missed opportunities by the Government and its predecessors of recent years. We are...
- Seanad: Budget 2026 (Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation): Statements (8 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I thank her for providing her opening address. We all saw on "Prime Time" last night some of the real-life stories of some of the families impacted by this budget. Some are saying they are worse off. Today, I will talk about the minimum wage and the failure of the Government to move to a living wage. The delay in replacing the national...
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: The witnesses are very welcome. I thank them all for their statements. Ms Bayliss mentioned the Parliamentary Budget Office. The outlook is not looking good if the Parliamentary Budget Office is saying that a rise in income poverty is evident for the elderly, increasing from 13.3% in 2024. Child poverty also rose from 15.3% in 2024 to a forecasted 16.1%. I want to ask Ms Bayliss about...
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Am I also right in thinking that education is included in the entitlement of hours to work? That is wrong, in my opinion. People are trying to better themselves and get an education, but that is included as working. There is definitely an issue about the amount of work involved.
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: That is what I mean.
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Okay.
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Is it really hard to get the equal start programme? If we know it works, why is there a lack of investment in it?
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: The services I know think it is an amazing programme that works. With regard to the building blocks programme, from listening to people working in the sector, is that funding notoriously hard to get? It is a good idea that money is put towards community centres, but I understand there are areas that have nothing. What did Ms Heeney refer to them as?
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Is it a laborious application to get funding? Basically, is the process too hard for services?
- Committee on Children and Equality: Child Poverty and Deprivation: Discussion (9 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I am not going to be long at all. It must be so frustrating for the witnesses coming in here. This is my first time sitting on this committee, and things do not change. In fact, it seems from the budget that things are getting worse. If the right to flexible work or the right to work from home was in legislation, would that have a huge impact? My second question continues on what...
