- Seanad: Taxi Regulation Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Jun 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join Senator Browne in welcoming the Minister to the House and welcoming this Bill. We are all aware of the reasons for this Bill. It is primarily a response to the deregulation that took place in the public service vehicle sector some time ago. Deregulation was not, as Senator Browne indicates, the chosen response of the Government at the time. It was based on the outcome of a High Court...
- Seanad: Taxi Regulation Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Jun 2003)
Timmy Dooley: People who have had convictions will find it hard to get employment in other sectors. If a conviction is on their CV it does not help them in getting a regular job. A licence helps people who are trying to become self-employed and carve out a life for themselves and their families without having to resort to crime again. We should be very careful about how we view people with criminal records.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Jul 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I ask the Leader to highlight the issue of organised crime. I recognise there will not be time between now and Friday for a debate on the matter but perhaps she will contact the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. There has been much debate here in recent months on crime and public order offences. To some extent organised crime has gone off the agenda but it has not gone away. This...

Timmy Dooley: Hear, hear. This is good news.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Jul 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join Senators Finucane and Maurice Hayes on the issue of Filipino nurses who certainly provide a tremendous service for this country. The persons about whom I am most concerned are their spouses and families. Their spouses are not allowed work here at present. The difficulty this causes for their families is particularly striking given that many are young women with young families. In most...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Oct 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join Senator O'Toole in calling for a debate on rail infrastructure in the mid-west region. It is of particular importance at present given the changes that are envisaged for Shannon Airport, the necessity to ensure the future of that airport as a gateway to the mid-west region and its importance for tourism. An important element of that will involve building a rail link from Shannon...
- Seanad: Public Transport: Motion. (15 Oct 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I move amendment No. 1: To delete all words after "Seanad Ãireann," and substitute the following: "welcomes the significant progress made in recent years to improve transport infrastructure and public transport services in Dublin and supports the continuing actions being taken by the Government to implement an integrated transport plan for the Greater Dublin Area. In this regard, the Seanad:...
- Seanad: Public Transport: Motion. (15 Oct 2003)
Timmy Dooley: We are talking about the projects on this side. I will get to the Ennis bypass. The Senator need have no worry about that. I get annoyed because I know how grateful we would be in the entire midwest region to suffer the inconvenience people on the eastern side of the country are experiencing. We would be grateful because we know that inherent in that inconvenience would be the recognition...
- Seanad: Public Transport: Motion. (15 Oct 2003)
Timmy Dooley: There is such a pool of talent on this side of the House that we can provide our own opposition.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Oct 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join with Senator Burke in expressing my sympathy to the families of the victims of the horrendous tragedy in my constituency of Clare over the weekend. Not wanting to prejudice any investigation that might be under way, I agree it is time to urgently look at the trade in unroadworthy cars. The Minister for Transport, Deputy Brennan, has indicated he is prepared to do so. All Members of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (23 Oct 2003)
Timmy Dooley: The Government has introduced many Bills.
- Seanad: Broadcasting (Funding) Bill 2003: Second Stage. (4 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I wish to share my time with Senator White.
- Seanad: Broadcasting (Funding) Bill 2003: Second Stage. (4 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and the Bill, which will be of considerable benefit. It deals with a matter that needed to be addressed for some time considering the public service broadcasting element, which the licence fee should cover. For some time there has been debate over the extent to which the licence fee has been used for this purpose. While I agree that RTE has done a...
- Seanad: National Development Plan Mid-Term Evaluation: Statements. (5 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: Or toads.
- Seanad: National Development Plan Mid-Term Evaluation: Statements. (5 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join with my colleagues in welcoming the Minister of State to the House and the opportunity to discuss this report by the ESRI. It is timely that we have an opportunity to discuss it so close to its launch. I recognise the input of a number of other important consultants into this report. There has been much comment and interest in the observations of the report's authors, particularly in...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join with Senator Brian Hayes in welcoming the legislation on road safety which the Minister proposes to bring before us tomorrow. We all agree that the introduction of penalty points in particular has led to phenomenal results in terms of road safety over the past 12 months. Some 70 lives have been saved. I am sure the Leader agrees that the Minister has acted quickly to introduce...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: He has been here on at least three, if not four occasions over the past 12 months. I refute what Senators Brian Hayes and O'Toole said.
- Seanad: Book of Estimates 2004: Statements. (26 Nov 2003)
Timmy Dooley: I join with colleagues in welcoming the Minister of State and the publication of the Book of Estimates for this year. Great credit is due to the Minister for Finance, Deputy McCreevy, the Minister of State and the entire Government for achieving this remarkable level of public spending again this year. There is a 5% increase in public expenditure despite the straitened economic circumstances...
