Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Updates on Breastfeeding: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Róisín Shortall: I welcome our guests and thank them not only for coming before the committee but also for the incredible work they do on a voluntary basis, very often at a time when they are all very busy themselves in their own lives. Given that our breastfeeding rates are disappointingly low at present, we have to wonder how much lower they would be if the voluntary groups were not involved. At an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Updates on Breastfeeding: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Róisín Shortall: Normally in these circumstances, where services are inadequate, we would be talking about the need for an action plan. However, there is an action plan on breastfeeding. The difficulty is with the slow pace of implementing it. This committee can play a role in respect of taking this issue up with the Department. Has anyone got an estimate of the cost of fully implementing the action plan?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Updates on Breastfeeding: Discussion (12 May 2021)

Róisín Shortall: I thank Ms Etherton. I have two more brief questions. First, the research Bainne Beatha has done is excellent. It is a really good report and I thank the witnesses for sending it to the committee. Turning to the wider context of academic research, what added value does an informal project undertaken by Bainne Beatha, Cuidiú or any of the other support groups provide to the formal...

Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (19 May 2021)

Róisín Shortall: The Bill before us today provides for the extension of the three-year cap on assessable property to farms and businesses for not less than 50% of their normal working time for six years. This is an issue that has been long-recognised as something that needed to be addressed. To that extent, I have no difficulty with the Bill today and the Social Democrats will not be opposing it. What is...

Financial Resolution 2021 - Financial Resolution: Stamp Duties (19 May 2021)

Róisín Shortall: Earlier today, the Minister said the purpose of these measures was to protect homes for families. That was a telling remark. Clearly this Government does not believe that families live in apartments. It believes that apartments are for students and renters but not for families, it seems, so they are not protected and they are left to the vultures. It may come as news to the Minister that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Ventilation and Covid-19: Discussion (19 May 2021)

Róisín Shortall: I thank both our guests for their presentations. The case they have made makes absolute sense. Sometimes straightforward, common-sense things are overlooked and a more complicated approach to things is taken.
