Exploring Technologies and Opportunities to Reduce Emissions in the Agriculture Sector: Discussion
(24 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I am very appreciative of that answer. It is very helpful. I am mindful the time. I know others want to get in but I am interested in that question. Mr. Burke might come back to it in further answers and perhaps show a correlation between improved water quality and the use of technology such as his.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Joint Meeting with Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action
Exploring Technologies and Opportunities to Reduce Emissions in the Agriculture Sector: Discussion
(24 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I am back in the Chair as Deputy Cahill had to leave to attend to some business. Mr. Paul Price, a research assistant at Dublin City University, has joined us. I apologise for keeping him waiting. The previous section of the session ran over time. I will read the note on privilege before we begin. The witness is attending from outside the parliamentary precincts so unlike witnesses...

Exploring Technologies and Opportunities to Reduce Emissions in the Agriculture Sector: Discussion
(24 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I thank Mr. Price for his opening statement. I will now invite members to indicate their wish to ask questions. I will kick off with my questions. We had witnesses before us in the previous sessions. I do not know if Mr. Price watched those. The first witness spoke to the importance of metrics at the farm level to encourage farmers to drive efficiency and, ultimately, emissions reduction...

Brian Leddin: I thank Mr. Price. I am interested in his views on those. He cited the difference between Ireland's and Denmark's approaches over the past number of decades. Perhaps he could elaborate on that. I think he said that Denmark maintains protein output, while not increasing either emissions or fertiliser use. I do not quite recall which of the two it was. Could Mr. Price speak more about the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I have received apologies from Deputies Farrell and Devlin who unfortunately cannot join us. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss our energy challenges and opportunities. It is the fourth and final meeting in the series we have held over the past few weeks. We have talked about the grid, development of the grid, interconnection, energy storage, which is something we will really get...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I thank Ms MacEvilly for her statement. I call now on her namesake, Mr. McEvilly, to make his opening statement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I thank Ms Connolly for her opening statement and all the witnesses for their opening statements. There is a great deal to think about. It is hard to know where to begin when asking questions. Can I get agreement from the committee that members will take only two minutes to ask questions? I will ask our witnesses to be as brief and as succinct as they can be, notwithstanding there is much...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: Before I bring in Ms Connolly, is Mr. Melvin saying Brexit has put Ireland in a situation where it is not complying with the energy security requirements of EU law?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I thank Ms MacEvilly for that answer. I call Dr. McGowan.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: I recall Mr. McGowan making that point clearly on the last occasion. I thank him pointing that out again. I note Mr. McEvilly's hand is raised but I will bring in Ms Connolly first.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: On that point, one of the witnesses before us last week, Mr. Keating from Shannon Foynes Port, spoke about the 80 GW opportunity as opposed to the 5 GW we are pushing for 2030. He felt strongly that a grid connection should not be a requirement of the offshore procurement process simply because the large international investors do not necessarily want to bring their energy to Ireland - in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: Thank you for that, Mr. Gannon.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: We will go to the regulator first.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)

Brian Leddin: There is the point, of course, that the market is designed so that it makes sense to have the capacity that is not necessarily used. It is only used in extreme situations. I do not want to take more of the committee's time; I have hogged it enough. I will go to Ms Connolly and Mr. McEvilly, who wanted to respond to Deputy O'Sullivan's question.
