- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. Having this conversation on obesity at this committee is a step in the right direction. Previous speakers set the stage. Those involved have set out what they need and what they want to move it forward. Sometimes at committee meetings I wonder what the witnesses want or need. I thank Dr. Murphy because she told us what she needs and wants to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Is the child's flexibility measured? Do we measure their flexibility to ensure that they can participate in sport, and that their measurements are good? Does Professor Kelleher know what I am talking about?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Absolutely
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I suppose I am no different from Senator Noone in that I have done my own little bit of research. Mine focuses solely on flexibility and mobility and the role the transition year, TY, programme could play with first years such as measuring them when they come in and seeing how they do at the end of the year. That is a way of giving control back and it is peer led. It would be wonderful to...

Anne Rabbitte: All right.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Will Dr. Murphy explain further the behaviour model for managing and preventing mild or moderate obesity and what type of resources in terms of healthcare staff would be needed to deliver it? She mentioned a public health nurse earlier. Does she want to expand on that because in that case the intervention by the public health nurse was a key factor?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Do I have one minute left?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I will try and get three questions into one. I have been very vocal about marketing. It is not just digital marketing. It is all forms and across all platforms. I would be very interested to hear what Professor O'Shea thinks about that. I must also bring in the children's hospital. I am led to believe that a fast food unit is sponsoring a particular unit within it. I have a huge issue...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Yes, exactly.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I will finish with a question about funding for the clinical lead and everything else. Do the witnesses have enough funding to do the job they are doing, because they are doing significant work? Would it not be far better if McDonald's were to give the €1.5 million to the work being done by the witnesses instead of targeting children?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I understand.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Recent research shows we plateaued out in respect of this 2015. Did certain policy interventions get us to that stage?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Business of Joint Committee (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Will anybody from DEIS be coming in because we heard a lot about intervention today. That is a key piece for me. Have we considered DEIS at all?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Business of Joint Committee (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: That is perfect.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Mental Health Services: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I thank the witnesses for coming here today, for being so open, honest and frank with us and for giving us an insight, because, to be quite honest with them, we might not have had that before. We have been here a couple of months and I suppose today was a day when we got a better understanding. I thank them for that. Earlier, Ms Magaharan spoke about the neurological conditions and she...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Mental Health Services: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: If the Chair does not mind, I will interrupt there. The current format is that every case is an isolated case, depending on the label attached to it. One does not look at it in the greater sphere of what other tag-ons could be or what other associations are. That is not the model that we operate in child and adolescent mental health services, CAMHS, is it?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Mental Health Services: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: Is there good engagement between the two Departments?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future of Mental Health Care: Mental Health Services: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: A problem is that in many schools, only two referrals might be allowed to NEPS on an annual basis which puts huge pressure on the system. That is a different conversation but Mr. Walsh is right about that.
- Topical Issue Debate: Voluntary Sector Funding (19 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I thank the Minister for coming in to bring clarity to a question that has been in the media for the last week with regard to the withdrawal of funding for Scouting Ireland. Scouting Ireland does excellent work around the country and this is down to the commitment, good work and will of the volunteers who keep it running. All the volunteer group's work should be properly supported and...
- Topical Issue Debate: Voluntary Sector Funding (19 Apr 2018)
Anne Rabbitte: I thank the Minister for her frank answer. The clarity she has brought to the matter is much appreciated, as is her openness in telling the House about what is to happen later today. The volunteers will welcome the clarity in regard to funding continuing until June. The Minister's reply has raised many questions about timeframes which it would not be fair of me to ask at this moment. She...
