Child Protection: Motion (Resumed) (28 Jan 2009)

James Reilly: I wish to share time with Deputy Shatter, whom I thank for affording me the time and for bringing this motion to the House. Yet again, this country has been shaken to the core by a shocking case of child abuse that took place over a protracted period of time. What makes this case so disturbing is that relevant authorities were made aware of it and that the children were on an at-risk...

Departmental Staff. (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: What about Balbriggan or Swords?

Social Welfare Benefits. (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: The Minister's answer does nothing to address the original priority question, which was why one can get looked after in a matter of ten days in Ballymun, but elsewhere in the country it could take 11 weeks. Before Christmas, I asked the Minister why, knowing that a contract was up with the local provider in Balbriggan, no provision was made for people to claim unemployment benefit when that...

Social Welfare Benefits. (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: They are not in place.

Social Welfare Benefits. (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: They are not dealing with claims. Those are aspirations.

Social Welfare Benefits. (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: There are empty offices all over the place. This is nonsense.

Order of Business (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: With the Minister for Health and Children sitting beside the Tánaiste, will she inform the House when the health information Bill be published?

Written Answers — Medical Cards: Medical Cards (3 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: Question 216: To ask the Minister for Health and Children if she will issue a report on the means test for the over 70 years medical card (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3124/09]

Stabilisation of the Public Finances: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: I wish to share time with Deputy Michael Ring.

Stabilisation of the Public Finances: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: I ask the Ceann Comhairle to tell me when I have reached five minutes. This is the greatest financial crisis this country has faced since the foundation of the State. The startling unemployment figure of 328,000 people, the greatest number ever, is just another reminder of the stark reality facing so many of our citizens. The sad thing about this is that it was seen coming. Commentators...

Stabilisation of the Public Finances: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: The economy is frozen and there is no activity in the market because everybody is afraid. They are afraid for their jobs and savings. There is no certainty anywhere. We need to put some real initiatives in place. We have already asked for a reduction in VAT and have suggested a moratorium on PRSI for new employees to encourage employers to take them on. I suggest a six month moratorium on...

Energy Prices: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: I wish to share time with Deputies Ring and Coveney. The Minister of State said the transmission system assets would be transferred to the ESB but I hope he means EirGrid.

Energy Prices: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: He also referred to meeting Ireland's renewable targets by 2020 but that is a joke. People are hanging on by their fingernails in business and they cannot wait until 2020 for a 15% reduction in energy costs. I commend Deputy Coveney's timely motion on energy prices. Domestic households and businesses are burdened with some of the highest prices in the EU for electricity and gas. Energy...

Energy Prices: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: It would also encourage small companies to become involved in green energy production, including tidal and wave energy. The possibility of Ireland being a net exporter of energy, as these technologies improve, cannot be ruled out. The Minister of State said the Government is encouraging this but it is not doing so quickly enough. People are being penalised and they cannot access the grid....

Energy Prices: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: The Minister of State is the Green Party representative for my constituency. How he can preside over a reduction in the number of buses and in public transport generally in the constituency when it is totally contrary to his party's policy is beyond me. Meanwhile, we pay millions of euro to maintain bus lanes with no buses to run on them.

Energy Prices: Motion (Resumed) (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: This position is all the more galling when the Germans are producing carbon free energy. This is a gross abuse of monopoly and it must stop. When oil prices increase, energy companies are very efficient and responsive in putting prices up but it is a different story when prices are coming down. The consumer and business community are slow to receive the benefit of falling oil prices. This...

Written Answers — Health Service Expenditure: Health Service Expenditure (4 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: Question 176: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the details of accommodation and premises leased to the Health Service Executive in an area (details supplied) in County Donegal; the date on which each lease agreement was signed; the rent per square metre for each of the premises leased; the amount each lease cost in 2008; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3660/09]

Order of Business (5 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: Platitudes again.

Order of Business (5 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: This morning I heard the bad news that another 40 jobs in north Dublin are gone in the Dublin-Meath Growers group, due to Tesco's belief that it is better to divide and conquer. That company's premises was opened by the Minister of State, Deputy Sargent, only last September. Will the Tánaiste tell us when the industrial relations (amendment) Bill will be introduced?

Order of Business (5 Feb 2009)

James Reilly: On the same issue, will the Bill accommodate organisations such as Educate Together which has been in existence for 30 years and has been approved by the President of Ireland as being a wonderful institution? It is extraordinary and people cannot understand why they are not allowed to be patrons of schools.
