- Seanad: Statute Law Revision (Pre-1922) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (13 Apr 2005)
David Norris: That will be a treat. The Leader took some of the other plum titles in her speech such as the Adulteration of Coffee and Tea Acts. However, it must be remembered tea was an expensive commodity. I have an 18th century porcelain tea caddy, passed to me by my great-grandmother. Tea was kept in it under lock and key and doled out in small amounts because it was so expensive. That explains why the...
- Seanad: Statute Law Revision (Pre-1922) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (13 Apr 2005)
David Norris: How interesting. The Chimney Sweepers and Chimneys Regulation Act 1840 sounds charming, recalling the song "Chim Chimney, Chim Chimney, Chim Chim Cheree". However, the activity was unspeakable with small children forced up chimneys to dislodge the soot with their bodies. They were so thin and developed the most grotesque cancers from exposure to the hot soot. Despite, the fun one can have...

David Norris: Jumble sales.

David Norris: I thought Senator Ross was before me.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
David Norris: I bow to the Cathaoirleach's wisdom. I understand. I support the call for the debate on the health service, but I do not think it is merely a question of increasing funding. I whispered to my colleague, Senator Ross, "Have there not been massive increases?" and he said, "Triple â the budget has tripled". So the answer obviously is not money alone. I would caution against the type of media...

David Norris: I will give the House my reasons. I hear people saying all the time, "But it is our stadium". Taxpayers have contributed massively to this stadium andââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
David Norris: As always, I want to be agreeable and positive. I notice also that there is to be a debate about anti-social behaviour orders, which I welcome. The two could be combined because the GAA, as an organisation for which I have a regard, should be going into the deprived areas of the inner city to council housing estates. Those people have very few facilities. That is why we need anti-social...

- Seanad: Order of Business. (19 Apr 2005)
David Norris: I join in congratulating my colleague, Senator Ross. I was unsure about going to the dinner this evening but I now think I must go to enjoy his success. I support the comments of colleagues on the issue of Tristan Dowse. This is a regrettable situation as it is terrible to think an Irish citizen child should be tied up in legal red tape. There are anomalies the House should address. Will the...

- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Apr 2005)
David Norris: Senator Brian Hayes has raised the matter of the election of the Pope. I have made my mixed and doubtful feelings known on a previous occasion and it would be indecorous for me to revisit those sentiments this morning. It is very naturalââ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Apr 2005)
David Norris: I understand that and I do not propose to. It is perfectly natural and appropriate to send good wishes to anybody entering a new and onerous job and I am happy to do so. The new Pope has chosen one of the most beautiful Papal names. Benedictus is someone who is well spoken, speaks positively and in a godly fashion. I wish that he is able to find in himself the qualities to live up to this...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)
David Norris: I join with Members in expressing concern about the plight of Irish consumers. Today, the newspapers are quoting from a report that states that the Irish consumer is not getting a fair deal. However, I worry about the removal of the prohibition on below cost selling. This will be the death knell of small retail grocery stores.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Apr 2005)
David Norris: It gives the enormous multinational chains an unfair advantage. Although there may be immediate small gains for individual consumers, ultimately it will be negative for them. I wish to raise another issue. Last week, we referred to the worrying situation where a security test of some kind took place at Dublin Airport. At the time, I felt it was a media-driven event, akin to bringing a...

David Norris: Bravo.
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (21 Apr 2005)
David Norris: I will not pretend I have the wisdom to resolve this problem, but I have some comments to make. I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Conor Lenihan, to the House. In particular, I wish to show some solidarity with the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney. She has shown great courage in seeking this job for herself. Politically,...
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (21 Apr 2005)
David Norris: She is deceased. We can talk about her because she is dead. I am only saying good things about her.
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (21 Apr 2005)
David Norris: Maureen Potter would have had great play with Ben Dunne and his trolleys.
- Seanad: Accident and Emergency Services: Statements. (21 Apr 2005)
David Norris: I also wish to say that we now have very high expectations. We appear to have forgotten we are perishable goods and have some degree of responsibility for our own behaviour. Apart from issues with facilities, staffing and safety precautions, one of the critical problems for accident and emergency departments is the atrocious and unacceptable behaviour of people who are high as kites on drink...
