Seanad: Order of Business (27 Apr 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I am referring to substandard conditions in so many classrooms in primary schools.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Apr 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I will accept a debate if I can get it. As a former Minister, the Leader has a certain standing in this regard. I accept that the Chair would not wish me to invite the Leader to put her views on the record. I could not possibly comment on what the Leader might say.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Apr 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I again return with some reluctance to the total disregard of the democratic wishes of the people of Dingle by an uncaring Government, namely, the non-revocation of that order, which is nonsensical. I ask the Leader to appeal to the Minister finally to revoke this order. Nothing has happened and I wish to see it revoked. Focal scoir. Will the Leader briefly tell the House the days on which...

Seanad: Criminal Justice Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Apr 2007)

Paul Coghlan: Like the Minister, I want to acknowledge the valuable work of Senator Maurice Hayes on this section, and in so many other things, while he has been a Member of this House. I also commend the many things he did before he became a Member of this House. The Minister has partly covered the point I wish to make. He has given what many would say is valid justification for the exclusion of Members...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I wish to be associated with the complimentary and well deserved remarks offered by previous speakers and also with the useful comments made by Senator Brian Hayes and others regarding the forthcoming election and the duty of all citizens. We have all enjoyed serving as Members of what has been an extremely useful Seanad. I hope those of us who are fortunate later in the year will enjoy...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Roche, made a commitment in regard to Killarney House. Sadly, the cost relating to repairing it is rising each day. A report outlining the decay, rising damp, etc., by which the house is affected is in the public domain. We have waited far too long for a decision in respect of this matter. The sooner repairs are...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: The Leader is mistaken in her pronunciation. It is Dinis Cottage to which she means to refer.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: Cultural tourism is increasing at a rate that is three times faster than ordinary tourism. Something worthwhile, beneficial and useful could be done in respect of Killarney House. For example, an audio-visual installation relating to the park could be put in place along with a civic and large-scale reception area and a theatre for the performing arts. I urge the Leader to ensure, in so far...

Seanad: Protection of Employment (Exceptional Collective Redundancies and Related Matters) Bill 2007 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I thank the Minister of State and his officials. The legislation was necessary but perhaps somewhat overdue. There were shady practices and, therefore, a necessity for tidying up. I thank the Minister of State for this measure and wish him well.

Seanad: Protection of Employment (Exceptional Collective Redundancies and Related Matters) Bill 2007 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: He is not running for the Dáil.

Seanad: Protection of Employment (Exceptional Collective Redundancies and Related Matters) Bill 2007 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: We understand.

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: The Minister is absolutely right.

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister. As I understand it, the Bill is a technical measure designed to tidy up matters. I support all of the objectives laid out in the explanatory memorandum and by the Minister. Today is the penultimate day of this Seanad. This Bill has been initiated in the Seanad. It cannot go to the Dáil because that House has been dissolved. Therefore, the Minister for Community,...

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: Unfortunately, the signs are still wrong.

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: Much credit must go to Senator O'Toole as well.

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: It is unlikely he will be here.

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Second Stage. (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: It would be helpful if even the signage could be bilingual.

Seanad: Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2007: Committee and Remaining Stages (1 May 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I thank the Minister and his officials for their work on this Bill and for bringing it forward. As he said, he was caught on the hop like the rest of us but I wish this measure well, even if it must start again when we come back. At least the Minister has acted as John the Baptist on the work.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2007)

Paul Coghlan: I wish to be associated with the generous and well-deserved tributes to you, a Chathaoirligh, for your courtesy and kindness. One of the Members mentioned patience but I do not believe I ever tried your patience. I believe we got on well. With regard to the conduit for tickets, I never failed to resist any crumbs from the rich man's table.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2007)

Paul Coghlan: No. As a fellow Munster man, the Cathaoirleach can talk to me any time on that subject. I welcome the new Senators and wish those who were elected to the Lower House well. I also extend good wishes to my colleagues who are contesting the Seanad election. Now that the Leader has again traded places with his predecessor, I wish him well in filling those shoes. I hope they are not precarious...
