Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank the witnesses for their opening statements. It is the stated intention of the Cathaoirleach, Deputy Naughten, that these rural transport services be considered further in the coming year. Public meetings may be held with Local Link providers and with groups that have experienced difficulties with isolated patients in rural areas accessing appointments in regional hospitals.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Local Link Transport Services: Discussion (10 May 2023)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I acknowledge the huge positivity that has been in the room this morning. There are, of course, teething issues and there are places we want to improve. There is a natural impatience among public representatives who want these services rolled out as soon as possible to give maximum benefit but there is no doubting there has been a sea change in the provision of rural public transport. We...

Marc Ó Cathasaigh: That concludes this morning's consideration of rural public transport. The takeaway is that a great deal has been achieved in a short time but we still have much work to do. I now propose that the committee goes into private session to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2023)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank Mr. Harris, personally, and AsIAm for the continuing valuable support they have given the committee. I will not presume to speak for others on the committee, but when I became a member, I was terrified to open my mouth because I was afraid to say the wrong thing. AsIAm's training and the confidence it gave us were invaluable in the sense that I felt I could engage with the issue and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2023)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: I thank both organisations for their presentations. I am fascinated by the idea of urban design and how it shapes our interaction with our public spaces in a way that we often do not even realise. That is the case both with the places we decide to dwell and spend time and the places we walk through quickly. I have a basic parameter. I have a six-year-old and he is a bit of a live wire. I...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (16 May 2023)
Marc Ó Cathasaigh: Mr. Allen will know Arnstein's Ladder of Participation as well as any of us. There is public participation and there is real public participation. I think something that has been made very clear in this committee is the importance of the autistic voice. A town hall meeting, for example, may not be the place where that voice is heard. I am sorry for interrupting Mr. Allen.
