Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I welcome Senator Hackett and her family to the House today. It is great to have another progressive voice in the Chamber. Sinn Féin looks forward to working with her. I commend colleagues who have spoken out about University Hospital Limerick. What was not mentioned but I suspect is probably known, is that at the heart of this issue is a major problem with management at the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I am calling today for a further debate on Shannon Airport, in particular in light of the visit two weeks to these buildings by Major Ken Mayers and Tarak Kauff, a former US paratrooper. I am glad to say they received a tremendously warm reception. Ken is 82 years old and Tarak is 77. Since engaging in a peaceful protest on St. Patrick's Day, they have been on bail; their passports have...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: It was wonderful to see people from every party, except one, stand with them when they came into the House. I regret that it was the Fine Gael Party that did not engage in support of these people. I note my colleagues from the mid-west are here. The good news is that there is another opportunity for them to do so this Friday at Ennis Circuit Court, where the latest hearing for these two...

Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister. Sinn Féin intends to support Senator Ruane on these amendments. I know the Minister is aware of the extent of the scandal of reduced timetables. I want to acknowledge his commitment to tackling this issue. We all appreciate why these amendments are so important. Sinn Féin intends to support Senator Ruane on these amendments.

Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I move amendment No. 5:In page 6, between lines 14 and 15, to insert the following: “(4) (a) Schools shall, in addition to 27B (3)(g), provide to both parents and the Department of Education information relating to voluntary contributions, inclusive of the total monies collected annually, and a detailed expenditure of those monies by the school; and (b) The Department of Education...

Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I thank the Minister for the response. We will have to agree to disagree on this. The implication of this amendment is very simple. My own children's secondary school already knows what it collects each year in voluntary contributions. This is not onerous. Transparency is important and it is particularly important that we have transparency in regard to exactly what voluntary...

Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I move amendment No. 7:In page 6, to delete lines 24 to 27 and substitute the following:“(7) The Minister shall review the charter guidelines every 5 years; and may make such amendments to the charter guidelines as he or she considers necessary or appropriate following this review.”. This amendment concerns the review element of the guidelines. It is proposed that they be...

Seanad: Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill 2019: Committee Stage (6 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I really appreciate the Minister's comments which are very encouraging. The right thing to do is to withdraw the amendment and reserve the right to resubmit it on Report Stage. I look forward to further engagement on the issue with the Minister.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Foreign Conflicts (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Doyle. On the afternoon of 4 October a young artist and activist, 24 year old Dumar Noe Mestizo, was murdered in Cauca, southern Colombia, by men riding motorbikes. He is one of the latest victims of the chronic violence against members of the indigenous communities in Colombia. In 2009 Dumar's father, who was the Nasa indigenous leader, Marino...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Foreign Conflicts (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I thank the Minister for his response. I have to tell him that this is almost a personal matter for me at this stage. I went to Colombia in May and visited a town called Cajibio in the Cauca region, where the locals showed me pictures of all the young men who had been murdered by right-wing paramilitaries. They operate with impunity. That is why indigenous people have been so clear in...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: It is hard to believe. I know that because Marty Whelan mentioned it on his breakfast show on Lyric FM this morning. That is a show that is broadcast from Dublin but produced from Limerick. We are very proud of Lyric FM in Limerick.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: It is an absolute disgrace. Every job in Limerick is to go. That is what RTÉ has said. It is 100% true. I can tell the Leader that the people of Limerick will not forgive Fine Gael if Lyric FM in Limerick is shut down. It is the jewel in the crown of our arts and culture, and the Leader is laughing about it.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: Of course I am being political. I am a politician.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: What does the Leader expect me to be?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: I was in the Chamber.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Nov 2019)

Paul Gavan: A Leas-Chathaoirleach, the Leader asked me where I was when the Minister, Deputy Bruton, was in the Chamber earlier. I was sitting in this seat listening, and I can tell the Leader what he said. He said he was not across these matters and that they appear to be within the remit of RTÉ. He washed his hands like Pontius Pilate.
