Interdepartmental Committees. (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: My question relates to PPPs and infrastructure.

Interdepartmental Committees. (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: I am trying to be helpful to the people I represent and who must go through this grind daily. The Taoiseach is proposing a new electronic tolling system costing over €100 million. I join with Deputy Rabbitte in asking the Taoiseach to lift those tolls immediately, so that we may see the problems that might emerge——

Interdepartmental Committees. (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: The Ceann Comhairle is being very unreasonable with me today. My last question has to do with infrastructural investment, particularly in the critical area of transport, which in Dublin city is one of the crucial problems confronting our people. Has it ever occurred to the Taoiseach that sometimes the solutions might be much simpler than they are made out to be? Is he aware, for example,...

Interdepartmental Committees. (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: Does the Taoiseach agree that a pilot scheme should be introduced to run buses from the key areas of that very concentrated population centre? Uninterrupted bus lanes should be run into the city centre with sufficient buses and at a stroke we could remove thousands of private cars and bring people into the city by public transport in about half an hour. That does not require metros or...

Interdepartmental Committees. (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: Why do they not leave them down to see where the problems will emerge?

Suspension of Member (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: This is unprecedented. It is completely out of order for the leader of Fine Gael to launch an attack on an Independent Deputy under cover of a vote.

Civil Unions Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed) (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: The Ceann Comhairle almost did it again.

Civil Unions Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed) (21 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: Tá an-áthas orm teacht isteach anseo. San am gairid atá agam, tabharfaidh mé tacaíocht don Bhille agus don bhfeachtas seo. I strongly support the proposal before the Dáil and the campaign for the ratification of civil unions as a recognised institution. Judging by the letters, e-mails and telephone calls received by Deputies in recent days from gay and lesbian people when news emerged...

Joe Higgins: Question 210: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the provisions made in Irish hospitals for deaf patients in regard to sign language interpreters. [6703/07]

Order of Business (22 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: That is not good enough. This is a continuation of institutionalised hypocrisy and double standards at the very heart of the justice establishment for which the Minister has responsibility. It is just like the beef tribunal, with corruption all over the place and virtually the only person called to book was a journalist who brought it into the public domain.

Order of Business (22 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: Very senior members of the Garda Síochána leak routinely and with impunity to get their side of the story out.

Order of Business (22 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: Ask the family of the late John Carthy of Abbeylara, where the most senior members of the Garda Síochána spun against that unfortunate victim of heavy handedness. The Minister has been busy washing his hands of this affair. He may not do so. Deputy Kenny should send him over some of the hand gel he was touting around the hospitals yesterday.

Order of Business (22 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: The Minister carries responsibility for it and he must answer for the continuation of these double standards.

Order of Business (22 Feb 2007)

Joe Higgins: Lest there be any misunderstanding, you are not the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform. Any verbal aggression was directed towards him.
