Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: On behalf of the Labour Party I support this motion of no confidence in the Government. Listening to Senator Boyle, I was struck by the tone of his delivery and I thought he was going to tell us about his sleepless nights, as his party leader has done. The Green Party walked itself into the straitjacket of government, as it has been described. There was an alternative in 2007 and the Green...

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: They have now brought down the economy.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: One woman's interaction is another woman's interruption. That is heckling by any other name. I am happy to deal with that but I did not heckle Senator Boyle although I was severely provoked. It is a source of great national shame and humiliation that we brought in the IMF, the EU and the ECB. As Morgan Kelly said, we are now dependent on the kindness of strangers and they are not very...

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: To cut social welfare rates by €8 per week, to cut disability benefit, to cut carer's allowances are appalling developments in any Government, especially a Government that includes the Green Party which has said it is about protecting the vulnerable.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: We will not do it. The Labour Party has set its face against it. We will not reduce the minimum wage either.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: There are more than enough reasons on the grounds of economic policy for us to have lost all confidence in this Government, but there are many other ways in which we have lost confidence in it, such as the failure to introduce legislation on climate change. We would all love to see that, Senator Boyle.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: I introduced a Bill in this House three years ago and Senator Boyle has been saying that to me for three years.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: I look forward to it being passed. Not only has this Government failed on climate change, it has failed us on the children's rights referendum. In a week when we saw a lengthy sentence handed down to a serial abuser, we should remember that children's rights-----

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: I was interrupted.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: On children's rights, this Government promised much but did not deliver. On that issue, quite apart from the economy, we have lost all confidence in it.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: No, it was highly fictional.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: Behave.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: The Government has driven them out of employment now anyway.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: On a point of order, we argued for the removal of the tax break.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: No, they are not. Renegotiation of the deal is an option.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: It is called bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Seanad: Confidence in Government: Motion (8 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: It was not of much help.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: I support Senator Fitzgerald and Senator O'Toole in opposing the Order of Business. It is unacceptable that we would be asked to debate all Stages of the Social Welfare Bill, which is an important Bill that will make many changes and result in reductions to many people's income. That we would be asked to take all Stages of that today makes a mockery of the processes in the Seanad. The...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: I accept this is a very busy week in which we have a full schedule but it makes a mockery of the processes in this House if we are promised debates for specific dates that do not occur.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Dec 2010)

Ivana Bacik: I will ask for a further amendment to the Order of Business if the current order is agreed, which we cannot accept. I ask that time be made available this week, even for an hour, to debate that vital report. We all know education is the key driver to economic recovery and if we cannot debate this worrying report about levels of literacy, it shows we do not hold education in the high esteem...
