- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Housing and Retrofitting: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I am talking about retrofit that is purely residential. There is the shallow one and then there is the deep retrofit. Could I get a breakdown of the figures for shallow retrofit versus deep retrofit? Some colleagues have rightly said that when people hear that it might cost €40,000 or €50,000, they shy away. It is almost like breaking it down into chunks and explaining to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Housing and Retrofitting: Discussion (10 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: Insurance costs have skyrocketed on the back of this insulation material. My area of Dublin 12 was part of the warmer homes pilot scheme. One sees a lot of activity but people have complained that the insurance has skyrocketed. They find it more difficult to get reasonable insurance compared to what they had previously.

Máire Devine: Well said, Mark.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Proposed Legislation (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I will try to be less cranky. The Minister of State has got an expanded brief today. As the other Members are in absentia, I know the response will probably not be very satisfactory but I thank him for coming to the House. By way of background, in 2012, an expert group was appointed to review the Mental Health Act 2001 by the then Minister of State, Kathleen Lynch, and in 2015, a total of...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Proposed Legislation (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: It is as if they cannot allow any kudos to be given to Sinn Féin or other legislation proposed by the Opposition, including in terms of many money messages.
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Proposed Legislation (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I cannot say that it has, and the Minister of State did not expect me to say it did, but I thank him for the response. I would love an audit to be done on legislation proposed by those Members in opposition to see what legislation has been blocked. My sense is that everything is being blocked. I know the money message is being used and abused, and there have been questions over that. These...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I have a comment for Senator Craughwell. On my wedding night, in my wedding car with my new husband, the UDR took me out at gunpoint and went through every single present from my wedding day. The nationalist population, or whatever term the Senator wants to use, finds that the name of the UDR sticks in the craw. However, I commend the Senator and wish him the best of luck. We need to...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill 2019: Second Stage (11 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I welcome the Bill. I wish we had extra time, especially given the extremely tight turnaround time between Second Stage and all other Stages which are due to be taken tomorrow. That barely gives the House enough time to draw breath, let alone consider amendments. However, as I would prefer to see the Bill passed in some form, rather than not, I welcome it. The entire country was deeply...
- Seanad: CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill 2019: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I support the amendment. I also refer to the unfortunate blunders that seem to be repeated in the cervical screening programme. The news from last night further undermines the programme and we cannot afford it. In the words of Deputy Louise O'Reilly of Sinn Féin, it is incredibly regrettable. Surely the HSE should have informed these Houses as soon as it discovered this glitch in...
- Seanad: CervicalCheck Tribunal Bill 2019: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2019)
Máire Devine: I thank the Minister for his update on the IT glitch. Many women will view one blunder as unfortunate but a second blunder involving 800 cases is carelessness. The Minister referred to the Scally standards for extra capacity. Have some of the previous companies that took on this work been found lacking and let go contract-wise? How many of the previous companies that were at fault been...
