Ministerial Remuneration (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: So it does not exist.

Ministerial Remuneration (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: My question on that final point related to the measurement of the travel in question, which was the source of the controversy. The Minister might come back to that. It is curious that the Minister has said he had not heard of this laundry allowance. His colleagues were similarly unenlightened. It does exist. I strongly suggest that it should be abolished forthwith.

Ministerial Remuneration (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: I do not think a long review is needed.

Ministerial Remuneration (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: It has been cited in response to parliamentary questions. Perhaps the Minister might consider that point. The Minister dodged the question on the dual abode allowance by referring to overnight rates. This allowance allows for a Revenue write-off in respect of a percentage of the interest paid on the purchase of a second property or vouched elements in respect of the maintenance and so on,...

Sale of State Assets (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: In the case of both the ESB and Bord Gáis Éireann, the workforce holds shares so, with that in mind, I was curious to hear the Minister had not spoken to the trade unions. He might do that with some urgency because the employees will have a view on all of this. The Minister repeatedly made a claim today that the sell-off of these assets is somehow a pathway to enhanced competitiveness and...

I had in mind the 7,000 people who earn in excess of €100,000. In the same context, it is useful to note that 10% of families in receipt of family income supplement, the lowest paid workers in the State, are public sector workers. The Minister has identified a...

Public Sector Pay (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: Do I take it the answer is "No"?

Public Sector Pay (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: Some 10% of them are on family income supplement. The Minister is protecting people on outrageous salaries. The answer is clearly "No".

Public Sector Pay (28 Feb 2012)

Mary Lou McDonald: I assumed Other Questions was finished. I can only read from the response of the Minister that he is quite happy for a significant number of public servants to be so poorly paid that the State has to supplement their income with family income supplement, while giving us codswallop about expertise and skills to explain salaries he knows no sane person could justify.
