Rónán Mullen: If I may respond very briefly to the issue about grandstanding, I do not know to whom Senator O'Brien was referring but if I was interested in grandstanding, I would try to find an audience first.

Rónán Mullen: I will say what is relevant. I would ask the Minister whether he can think of a single aspect of any commission of inquiry which he found to be unsatisfactory and which necessitates the creation of this new mechanism. I ask for a practical example.

Rónán Mullen: Senators O'Brien and Byrne are somewhat contradicting each other. I have no problem accepting what Senator O'Brien says, that we are capable of making unpopular decisions and of adjudicating certain matters. However, Senator Byrne gave the particular example of the Nyberg report. In the subtext of what Senator Byrne says there is that concern that one group of politicians might use an...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2011)
Rónán Mullen: I express my agreement with what has been said by other speakers, including Senator van Turnhout. In Plain Sight offers us an opportunity to debate the important issue of how people were mistreated and abused in our past. We have had a debate on the Cloyne report and have since had the response of the Holy See. Perhaps we could incorporate it into the discussion. Most fair observers...

- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)
Rónán Mullen: I draw attention to the heartwarming news of the opening yesterday of the State's first hospice for children. The LauraLynn Hospice Foundation is doing great work and deserves the support of everyone. I note that it is something that is coming from the people and the community. To my knowledge, it has not received grant aid from any Government agency. In particular, I read about the story...
- Seanad: Address by President of the Irish Human Rights Commission (28 Sep 2011)
Rónán Mullen: Ba bhreá liom fáilte ó chroà a chur roimh ár n-aoi speisialta. Tá céad fáilte romhat, a Mhuiris. TréaslaÃm leat agus leis an gcoimisiún as ucht na héachtanna uilig atá ar siúl agaibh. I welcome Dr. Manning, formerly Senator Manning. Perhaps it is a case of once a Senator, always a Senator. Speaking for Senator Quinn and myself, I should welcome him not just as a former...

- Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)
Rónán Mullen: TacaÃm leis an méid atá ráite ag an Seanadóir Bacik. Is minic muid ag lorg dÃospóireachtaà sa Teach faoi chúrsaà oideachais. Is minic muid ag rá go bhfuil sé fÃor-thábhachtach go ndéanfaà eisceacht maidir le cúrsaà oideachais agus go bhfuil géar-ghá le hinfheistÃocht in oideachas mar, mar a deir Aontas na Mac Léinn in Ãirinn, infheistiú san aiséirà atá i gceist....

- Seanad: Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (29 Sep 2011)

- Seanad: Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (29 Sep 2011)
Rónán Mullen: My point is that only zero tolerance will work and for certain technical reasons there should be a limit of 20 ml of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
- Seanad: Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2011: Committee and Remaining Stages (29 Sep 2011)
Rónán Mullen: The Seanad should not send out the message that its objective is to dumb down the issues. There are serious issues which underlie policy change and consideration must be given to a range of matters in that regard. In outlining my thinking on this amendment, I have been obliged to explain such matters. That is perfectly legitimate. To the best of my knowledge, I have not repeated myself -...
