- Seanad: Report on Credit Union Sector: Statements (9 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: The Minister of State is very welcome to the House. I dealt with him on a number of occasions in the past when I was a Member of the bigger Chamber, but I am privileged to have him in here. About seven years ago I was lucky enough to be in Benin in west Africa. I happened to be at the first AGM of a small credit union in a village. It was all operated by women. It was giving out...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I wish to raise two issues. I support Senator Bacik's call for a debate following the referendum on electoral reform. I would like to broaden that debate to include a preliminary discussion on Seanad reform. Senator McDowell is chairing an all-party committee in this regard, but we should discuss Seanad reform during a debate on electoral reform and put forward ideas for him to mull over....
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: There are other emblems on display as well but this is more important than some of them.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I argued with Senator Freeman at the time and I admit I was wrong. When the T-shirt is displayed on the night, it is a powerful symbol.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: Irrespective of whether I am the new boy, this is an important issue.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: The event this weekend is an opportunity for people who have been bereaved by suicide to congregate and it is also an opportunity for us to meet them and bring their thoughts to the Chamber. All of us at some stage in our lives have been in a dark spot but we have been lucky enough to find the light. Others have not and we should be supportive of them whenever possible. Next week I would...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I thank the Cathaoirleach. I hope there will be many pleasantries between us in the future. I also wish to condemn the murders by the Israeli Defence Forces and the Government of Israel for its actions in recent days. It is not only the last number of days but has been ongoing since 1947 when Palestinians were evicted from their homes close to Jerusalem. Those of us who have been to the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (15 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: We, as the Seanad, could write to the Commission and encourage its adoption. Last Saturday, Israel won the Eurovision song contest. Some of us in this House are involved in the music industry. If things do not improve there, we should give consideration to not participating in the Eurovision Song Contest when it is held in Israel next year. The music industry could decide not to put...
- Seanad: Situation in Palestine: Statements (23 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I welcome the Minister of State for the debate on Palestine. I was a Member of the Lower House and this issue came up on a regular basis. There is no doubt that it will come up again in the future because nothing seems to be happening.
- Seanad: Situation in Palestine: Statements (23 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: Since 1946 when the Israeli State was brought into existence nothing has happened with regard to the Palestinian people. The only thing that has happened is that they have been forcibly removed from their houses. Even today, as we speak, Palestinian people are being moved off lands in the West Bank so that Israeli settlers can take the land. People do not seem to understand that there are...
- Seanad: Situation in Palestine: Statements (23 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I move that the House suspend until 3.50 p.m.
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: Like many other speakers I welcome Saturday's result. There was good political leadership shown and there was also great leadership shown in civic society. That really stood out. The great referendums that have been passed - this one and the vote on same-sex marriage - have been led by civic society. As politicians we should take a lesson from that. I am also mindful that on Friday the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: -----and not include words that will allow the legal profession to have arguments in the future? I wish to raise a final point. Can the Leader ask the Chair of the Seanad reform committee to give the House an update on what is happening? It appears to be stalled. I will be standing here seeking Seanad reform every day if necessary. Things have to change to make this House much more...
- Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: The Senator who wanted to close it down accepts the democratic decision. Once I am here I will be talking about reform. I ask the Leader to ask the Senator to come forward on that matter.
- Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I will take 30 seconds because I have just one quick point to make.
- Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: We are here discussing the future of An Post and whether we can get community banking into the country. One idea in Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare, is that the post office offers the services of an online doctor. These kinds of ideas should be brought forward to the post offices. We already have community banks here that need to be looked at. They are the credit unions. There is a...
- Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I second the Fine Gael amendment. It is interesting to listen to the debate. I am always concerned when Fianna Fáil talks about property tax and what it might or might not do. This seems to be the start of a debate relating to a future election promise in which Fianna Fáil will remove property tax. We all know what it did in 1977 when local authorities were funded by rates from...
- Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: I have no doubt but that this attempt to remove it will be before the electorate before the next election. As for Sinn Féin, it is talking about removing the property tax down here when someone in Newry has to pay two property taxes, one a local tax and the other a district tax, which it increases on a regular basis.
- Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: Sinn Féin down here shouts for the removal of the property tax -----
- Seanad: Local Property Tax: Motion (30 May 2018)
Anthony Lawlor: -----and then in Northern Ireland, call for it to be increased. I do not know what to make of that.
