Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: I do. I am only asking-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: Yes, but will the Department plant on these lands? I am only asking because they do emit carbon.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: They do. It is a proven fact that they emit carbon when they are planted on and again when they are harvested and replanted. We are going towards reduced carbon in this country so we do not have to pay fines from Europe. If these lands produce more carbon than they suck in and we are making carbon in this country, are we going to refund the carbon tax to people?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: I do.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: So the lands the Minister of State is talking about are the ones that do not emit any carbon.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Ash Dieback and Other Forestry Issues: Discussion (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: I am sorry. I did miss the start.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: The officials are welcome. We really appreciate them giving of their time. I know the officials do not deal with the regional balance for airports, but I am going to twist the question in a way and frame it in the context of the environmental impact of aviation. It may not be the fuel for the aircraft, but many people flying here to visit the west coast land in Dublin because 80% or so...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: I just wanted to get that in. I said I would throw it in under the environmental heading. I do not know about the fuel for the aircraft or how much more it would take. Mr. Fitzpatrick said it is only minutes from Shannon to Dublin on a flight, but it is a long way by car. The torment arises when you have to go Dublin because flights do not leave from your local regional airport.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Irish Aviation Authority: Engagement (16 Jul 2025)

Joanne Collins: I thank Mr. Fitzpatrick.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: I echo what we have heard in welcoming Martin Hughes to his new role. Congratulations to him. I also thank Bridget Doody, who always had a welcoming smile on her face to put us at ease when we walked in. I hope she enjoys her retirement. Today I will speak about how our legal aid system can sometimes overlook victims of domestic violence. We must recognise the serious gap that exists...

Seanad: Migration: Statements (23 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: I thank the Minister of State for being here this evening for what is a very important debate in this House. It is not spoken about very often and some might be afraid to speak about it, but it does need to be debated and we need to set the record straight on what is actually happening here in our wonderful country. At the moment, communities across Ireland are at breaking point. The...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Job Losses (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: I welcome the Minister of State and thank him for coming in. Across County Limerick and the wider region, we have seen a steady erosion of jobs, from Andersen Ireland a decade ago to Irish Dresden in 2021, Rettig in 2023 and, of course, Wyeth Nutritionals, which is closing next March. On top of that, last week we heard the announcement that Kostal in Abbeyfeale will be shutting down one...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Job Losses (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: I thank the Minister of State. This is great that it has not yet been announced to the Department but I have seen the internal emails to the staff. It is very important that the families of those who may be made redundant are looked after. However, if it does come to pass and 200 jobs are lost, I plead that the businesses in the area also be taken into account because of the loss of traffic...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: Today I want to raise an issue that happened last July. A town in County Limerick had severe rainfall within a very short space of time and flooding occurred. The local residents and businesses had been raising the potential for flooding for three or four years with the council and through their local TDs' offices. I do not know whether it fell on deaf ears or was just put on the long...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Nitrates Derogation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: I have one very quick question. I thank the witnesses very much for being here and for giving up their time. Mr. Callanan said that this has to be decided by 31 December. Is there a chance that it is going to be extended or are farmers going to have a situation come 1 January where this could be completely pulled until everything is put together, if that falls after 31 December?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Nitrates Derogation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: Therefore, Mr. Callanan will be pushing for an extension if it is a thing that-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Nitrates Derogation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: Okay. I thank Mr. Callanan. I just wanted to check for the farmers if there was going to be a possibility come 1 January that it was not in place, and we are pushing to make sure. It is great that we are all heading towards and have the same goals, which is amazing. It is just that we will have those farmers who are going to be waiting for the news and the stress it will cause waiting...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Nitrates Derogation: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Joanne Collins: That is great. I thank Mr. Callanan so much.
