Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Education Policy (12 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: 125. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills to provide an update on the STEM education policy statement; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30704/25]

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I thank the witnesses for coming in. I have a number of questions and they can pick them up as they like. Local Link is a fantastic service. Why was a decision taken not to build bus stops? We have a great service, which goes from town to town and it stops in many villages but there are no bus stops. It is shrouded in secrecy as to where the service is located. Who is responsible? Is...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: But they are working during the day.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: With all due respect, I come from a rural area. We must be pragmatic about this. The NTA must be radical in its approach because the current model is simply not working. We are leaving people in a situation where there is, in effect, a curfew after 9 p.m. That is the current situation with public transport in rural areas.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: How long will it take to cover the entire country?

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I will come back in now in the interests of saving time. I cannot understand why we do not put more money into the rehabilitation of roads over peat foundations. Essentially, we are throwing good money after bad because of the limited life span. Where the work has been done, it has been exceptionally good and the feedback is very positive. I encourage the NTA to do more in that area. ...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: Following up on my previous point, I formally request the action plan on the night-time economy, particularly from a rural perspective. I fully acknowledge the work that has been done in large cities and larger towns but how is it planned to actively address the issues that are there at the moment? There are towns and villages with literally no transport after dark. The night-time piece is...

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: My point is that the decision making lies with the Department and not with the local engineer. The local engineer could send five projects to the Department, but the Department basically gives it the green light. The councils literally have no decision-making power and are just the implementing partners, as such.

Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: Essentially, the decision making will not be going back to the local authority.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Disability Services (17 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I would like an update on the extent to which parents or next-of-kin of adult children with a disability are consulted on future care and the provision they receive.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Disability Services (17 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I thank the Minister of State. The future and provision of care as to how a parent's or guardian's loved ones will be looked after, particularly after they have passed, is something that keeps people up at night. The appointment of decision-making capacity and assistance with it is important, but there needs to be an element of understanding that the next of kin, where there is one, is...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Disability Services (17 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I acknowledge the efforts the Minister of State has made in this area. I recently met with the Muiríosa Foundation. The work it does in this space is commendable and is very welcome in terms of the initiatives it is bringing forward, particularly to encourage individuals with a disability into the workplace, into education and into different services. There is an element of needing to...

Written Answers — Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth: Disability Services (17 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: 114. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth if mapping of specialist disability services (residential, day, respite, and children’s) is being considered to inform individuals and their families of the location of specialist services; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [32268/25]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Business Supports (19 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: 12. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if usage data relating to the National Enterprise Hub is able to demonstrate the more popular or accessible business supports; if such information will help shape future supports; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32944/25]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Business Supports (19 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I thank the Minister of State for the update. I fully agree with her. When the Minister of State shares that information, she is essentially giving an insight into what is happening in the market. However, if a business owner sits in front of a computer and is looking for information, they do not necessarily know what they are navigating for. We need to be sharing that detail on the...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Business Supports (19 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I thank the Minister of State. She might not believe this but sometimes, I get feedback that the grant systems are too good to be true. When you get an applicant that has gone through the likes of an energy efficiency grant, how seamless it is and how easy it is to apply and get the payment, that feedback needs to get out there more. We will see an increase in that regard. No one can...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (19 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: I commend the progress the Government has made in public health over recent years, leading the way with many global initiatives. Alcohol labelling is a welcome initiative but I have concerns around the timing of its implementation. From a domestic perspective, there is growing uncontrollable uncertainty regarding global trade, and the Irish whiskey sector has found itself in the eye of the...

Written Answers — Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment: Work Permits (19 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: 27. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the average processing times for employment permits this year; how this compares with the same period last year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [32945/25]

Written Answers — Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection: Social Welfare Payments (19 Jun 2025)

John Clendennen: 125. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the number of people in receipt of a widow’s pension who are under age 66; if he will provide an estimated cost of allowing persons in receipt of widow’s pensions to access illness benefit in the event that they get sick at work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [33039/25]
