Michael Mullins: I join my colleagues in deploring the awful job losses we heard about this morning in Aviva Insurance. All Members must deplore what we have seen happening recently not only in Aviva Insurance, but in many other companies in this country. The last people who appear to be given consideration when major decisions are taken are the employees. Consider the means by which employees find out...

- Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2011)
Michael Mullins: I support Senator à Murchú's request for a debate because we are all very much aware of the contribution community organisations make to life throughout the country. A debate would show them we are interested and support what they are doing. An economic benefit could derive from us all putting our heads together to discuss this matter. Senator Cullinane was rather negative. He is unfair...

- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Oct 2011)
Michael Mullins: I support the innovative proposal made by Senator Healy Eames that the House debate with the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton, at the earliest opportunity, the ideas proposed by Fr. Seán Healy in respect of people who wish to work in lieu of receiving their social welfare payment and a small additional consideration. The country is on its knees and many of our young people...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2011)
Michael Mullins: Will the Leader make time available for a debate, possibly with the Minister for Finance, on the levels of pay in the semi-State sector? People would have read with dismay reports in this morning's newspapers to the effect that a prominent broadcaster in RTE who earns more than three and a half times the amount earned by the Taoiseach is resisting any attempts to reduce his pay. At a time...

- Seanad: Gender-Based Violence: Motion (26 Oct 2011)
Michael Mullins: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Jan O'Sullivan, and wish her well in her new post. I commend Senator Rónán Mullen for moving the motion to highlight an appalling abuse of dignity and human rights. I was not familiar with the term, gendercide, until I started to carry out research for this debate. Senators Rónan Mullen and Feargal Quinn have done the House a service by preparing...

Michael Mullins: I support Senator Paul Bradford's call for a debate on last night's developments in Brussels. I am sure we all welcome these developments. I congratulate the Taoiseach and the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Lucinda Creighton, on their contribution to a resolution of the Greek problem. I am pleased to note that a proposal raised yesterday in the House by...

- Seanad: Recent Developments in the Eurozone: Discussion with Minister of State (8 Nov 2011)
Michael Mullins: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Creighton, to the House and thank her for the update on the situation in the eurozone. As the Minister said, this is an extremely worrying and unpredictable time for everyone. People are frightened and confused and the complexities of the problems are beyond the comprehension of most ordinary people. I am sure many Members of this House would admit...
- Seanad: Recent Developments in the Eurozone: Discussion with Minister of State (8 Nov 2011)

- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
Michael Mullins: I support the call for a debate with the Tánaiste on the situation in Gaza. While I deplore the continued detention of 14 Irish people, it would be better if all the facts about these issues were put on the table. We need a balanced discussion on this issue. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is certainly a concern for us all. We need to see what we can do as a Parliament to advance peace...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
Michael Mullins: I feel it is a futile exercise.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)
Michael Mullins: It is unreasonable to expect a Minister to come to the House at the drop of a hat, or at the whim of the Opposition. Very valuable time is being lost. Yesterday, we lost a half an hour when the Minister for Education and Skills was due to attend the House to discuss the changes to the junior certificate. It is a waste of time.
