Seanad: Climate Change: Statements (10 Dec 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: I am not saying whether I am in favour of nuclear power - I am merely saying that the debate on it should be reopened as part of an overall debate on energy security and climate change.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Dec 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: Ba mhaith liom tréaslú leis an Seanadóir Ó Brolacháin as ucht bheith tofa go dtí an Seanad. Polaiteoir den chéad scoth é agus cuirim fáilte is fiche roimhe go dtí an Teach seo. Senator Ó Brolcháin is most welcome. He was well known as an outstanding city councillor and I am sure he will be equally effective in this House. I was invited today to a briefing session along with...

Seanad: Budget 2010: Motion (16 Dec 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: No.

Seanad: Budget 2010: Motion (16 Dec 2009)

Ned O'Sullivan: Very decent.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jan 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: I join others in congratulating Senator Paschal Mooney on his return to the Seanad. I knew him for many years while I was a county councillor and I always believed he presented a positive and professional image of the Seanad. He will continue doing so. Those of us involved in party politics know that loyalty is easy when one is winning, but not so easy when one is not winning. Despite the...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jan 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: She has been vindicated. She is a woman of strength and prudence and she should be recognised as someone who puts the taxpayer and the health of the nation first.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jan 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: I would like to start the week with some good news. I know the Leader believes there have not been enough good news stories in the media. Colleagues read the reports in last week's newspapers about the success of the dublinbikes project and how additional bikes were required and additional bays were being provided. The project is making a huge contribution to easing traffic flow in the...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jan 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: As it was part of the Green Party agenda and all of our green agendas, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Gormley, and his colleagues should be congratulated.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jan 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have subscribed to the scheme and I travel to work most mornings using dublinbikes. It is an exhilarating way to travel and it is safe. The bikes are sturdy and there is a bay beside Leinster House. I recommend to the Leader and all my colleagues to leave the Mercedes at home in the apartments or hotels and to travel to Leinster House using dublinbikes from now on.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: This would be a very good time to have a debate on the food and drinks industry in the light of the recent announcement by the Minister of State, Deputy Trevor Sargent, of the third round of horticultural grants — this sector has been hard pressed owing to weather conditions and everything else — whereby young farmers can receive support up to a figure of 50% on eligible investment. This...

Seanad: CAO Applications and College Places: Statements (10 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: And Cork Airport.

Seanad: CAO Applications and College Places: Statements (10 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: Like previous speakers, I warmly welcome the Minister of State. I commend him on the excellent work he is doing in a brief that is more important that ever in the current economic climate. Senator Buttimer made an outrageously political speech but his fellow Corkman, the Minister for Education and Science, is carving out a reputation for himself as one of the great education Ministers...

Seanad: Ombudsman Report on the Lost at Sea Scheme: Statements (18 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: Ba maith liom fáilte a chuir roimh an Aire Stáit, an Teachta Tony Killeen, agus tréaslaím leis as ucht an sár obair atá á dhéanamh aige. I am conscious at the outset that this debate concerns a tragic loss of life at sea, which should inform all our deliberations. That is more important than any other aspect that will be raised here. Fishing has always been a dangerous occupation....

Seanad: George Mitchell Scholarship Fund (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: I have no additional wisdom to bring to bear except to note the name of George Mitchell resonates with everyone. All decent people in Ireland, North and South, owe him an enormous debt. He was a fantastic man who was greatly involved in the peace process and sometimes people in Ireland are quick to forget those who have been of best use and value to them. I would be loath to be in favour...

Seanad: George Mitchell Scholarship Fund (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: I hope to be back. The Cathaoirleach will be familiar with a scheme operating among local authorities, namely, writers in residence whereby a noted writer would spend six months or so in a county town like Tralee. Having a Mitchell scholar in residence around rural counties might be a nice idea, as this would give them broader access away from university towns and cities. There might be a...

Seanad: George Mitchell Scholarship Fund (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: Senator Healy Eames is involved in an arts festival in Galway. Perhaps some of the scholars in question could be seconded to festivals such as that, writers' week in Listowel and so on. They would gain practical as well as academic experience. It is a good news story.

Seanad: George Mitchell Scholarship Fund (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (23 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: We just need to find the money for it. I wish the fund well.

Seanad: Special Educational Needs: Motion (24 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: She is good at the publicity part of it as well.

Seanad: Special Educational Needs: Motion (24 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: That is a sign of good government.

Seanad: Special Educational Needs: Motion (24 Feb 2010)

Ned O'Sullivan: The Senator got enough answers already.
