Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Bill 2010 [Seanad]: Second Stage (2 Jul 2010)

Darragh O'Brien: ...think outside the box in drafting this legislation. Everyone understands that simply banning substances as they emerge does not work. When passed, the Bill will have the effect of providing the Garda with the powers it requires to seek orders to shut these shops down. That is an extremely important development. Like other Members, I have attended many meetings at which the issue of head...

[5830/17]

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Station Opening Hours (8 Nov 2018)

Darragh O'Brien: 91. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality if he will review the early closure time of Malahide Garda station with a view to extending the hours of operation to 24 hours to provide for the safety and protection of the local community; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [46203/18]

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Sep 2015)

Darragh O'Brien: ...the country. Just before we returned after the recess we saw the publication of the interim report of the Fennelly commission on the retirement or sacking, depending on one's perspective, of the former Garda Commissioner, Mr. Callinan. It is fair to point out that, judging from any of the polls taken, the general public does not believe the Taoiseach's version or his accounts of what...

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Ministerial Staff (25 Jan 2022)

Darragh O'Brien: My Department currently employs six civilian drivers. At this time there are no Garda Ministerial drivers assigned to my Department. The total cost for the civilian drivers was €136,304 in 2020 and €300,028 in 2021. These figures take account of the drivers' salary costs and expenses, along with the mileage costs which are claimed by each Minister in respect of their own vehicles.

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Garda Deployment (15 Nov 2016)

Darragh O'Brien: 89. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the number of Garda stations and the number of gardaí in the Dublin northern metropolitan region on 31 October 2010 and on 31 October 2016; the proportion of the proposed 800 additional recruits in 2017 that are likely to be assigned to the Dublin northern metropolitan region; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [34732/16]

Topical Issue Debate: Garda Deployment (8 Feb 2018)

Darragh O'Brien: Relax, Pat. Over the seven years Fine Gael has been in government, it has presided over the decimation of An Garda Síochána, certainly in my area. Does the Minister of State remember smart policing, which was a policy of Government under his former colleague, Alan Shatter, who the Minister of State might also remember? It was not very smart for the communities out there. Repeat...

Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Crime Levels (15 Nov 2016)

Darragh O'Brien: 37. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if recorded crime statistics for the Dublin northern metropolitan region are an accurate reflection of the reality of crime in the area; if all Garda stations in the Dublin northern metropolitan region have access to the PULSE system; if not, the details of the stations without access; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [34731/16]

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2011)

Darragh O'Brien: We will be opposing the Order of Business, in particular we will be opposing the motion on the appointment of a new Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission on the basis that it will not be debated in the Seanad and will go straight to the joint committee. When I saw the schedule last week I was uncertain about it. However, we will not agree to the motion being passed by the Seanad without...

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Planning Issues (4 Nov 2021)

Darragh O'Brien: ...allegations raised. A final decision on the appropriate action to be taken by my Department will be made in due course. My Department has not had engagement with Wicklow County Council or An Garda Síochána in relation to the matters raised.

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: State Bodies (20 Feb 2024)

Darragh O'Brien: ...of the Tailte Éireann Act 2022, Tailte Éireann is independent in the performance of its functions. I understand from Tailte Éireann that, as of 14 February 2024, they have not been made aware by An Garda Síochána of any current criminal investigation in connection with the matters raised. Tailte Éireann has indicated that it will cooperate with any...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2013)

Darragh O'Brien: ...available. On an even more important matter, I am in receipt of information which, in my view, will rock the National Assets Management Agency, NAMA, to its very core. Is the Leader aware that the Garda Commissioner has been requested to carry out an investigation into corruption and impropriety in NAMA?

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Dec 2011)

Darragh O'Brien: Will the Leader confirm on the question I raised yesterday that in early January we will have a proper debate on the issue of the Garda station closures and restrictions across the country, which are of great concern to citizens throughout the island? This issue needs to be addressed and I hope the Minister will be in better form early in the new year and we may be able to engage properly on...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Dec 2013)

Darragh O'Brien: ...preferred bidders. In fact, it is so serious that it requires an independent investigation and a statement from the Minister for Justice and Equality or the Minister for Finance. I understand the Garda Commissioner has had this information since early December. If even part of these allegations is true, it will undermine the entire operation of NAMA. I have come into possession of...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Oct 2013)

Darragh O'Brien: With regard to the action taken by the Garda Síochána and the HSE concerning two children, one in Tallaght and one in Athlone, I ask people to be careful about knee-jerk criticism of the force and the HSE in this regard. I agree wholeheartedly with the Minister for Justice and Equality, Deputy Shatter, and welcome his announcement of a swift investigation and independent report by...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2013)

Darragh O'Brien: ...financial advantage on them. This will ensure that these entities will profit off the backs of taxpayers and that viable businesses will be shut down as a result. I need to know today whether the Garda Commissioner has been requested to carry out a detailed investigation into corruption and impropriety in NAMA. It is crucial that the Taoiseach, the Minister for Finance or the Minister...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)

Darragh O'Brien: ...basis over the past two weeks we have witnessed the Minister's attempts to rubbish whistleblowers and attack the man but not deal with the issue. Yesterday my party leader gave details to the Taoiseach about allegations made by the whistleblower, Garda McCabe, who needs to be commended. Let us recall, a short two weeks ago, the evidence that the Garda Commissioner gave to the Committee...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 May 2014)

Darragh O'Brien: ...interested that Mr. Purcell would not answer questions on the commission of inquiry, led by Mr. Justice Nial Fennelly, into matters arising from the resignation or forced retirement of the former Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan. It beggars belief that the Taoiseach will not answer questions on his role in the matter publicly. I asked him about this here some weeks ago. It was he who...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Apr 2014)

Darragh O'Brien: ...General and the Taoiseach is spiralling absolutely out of control. The datelines given by the Government and the statements made by the Taoiseach, the Minister for Justice and Equality, the former Garda Commissioner and the Attorney General, Marie Whelan, do not tally. Forget about whether my party has a motion of no confidence in the Minister, Deputy Shatter, in the other House, the...

Written Answers — Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government: Closed-Circuit Television Systems (3 Nov 2020)

Darragh O'Brien: Community based CCTV schemes fall under Section 38 of the Garda Síochana Act 2005, as amended, which is under the remit of the Department of Justice. Matters relating to environmental enforcement are a matter for the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications. Local authorities are data controllers in their own right, with their own data protection officers appointed. My...
