Public Accounts Committee: 2017 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 21 - Prisons
(17 Jan 2019)

Marc MacSharry: That is grand and that is 365 days a year. I will come back to that in a few minutes. I am told that there is a Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, GSOC, investigation into the area of gardaí colluding with prison services in relation to prison staff. Can the witnesses confirm that?

Order of Business (21 Nov 2017)

Marc MacSharry: ...and provision of new stations which are "critical to delivering effective policing". I could not agree more. As Deputy Micheál Martin stated earlier, there is a serious issue in the regional Garda station in Sligo where an assistant commissioner sits.

Public Accounts Committee: Garda Internal Audit Report on ICT Directorate Payments Process (31 May 2018)

Marc MacSharry: I am asking about the current position. I understand we all want to get to an integrated system where a garda will be able to find out from his handset that Marc MacSharry, for example, has a long charge sheet and he should spend some time finding out where he is going.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: ...Sligo where somebody sitting in his home was tied up, beaten and left to die for a number of days. It shows a lack of fear among criminals that this crime took place yards from both the regional Garda headquarters and the seat of law and order, the courthouse, and near my own office. The victim was respected and he was no different from people in all our communities who could be killed...

Public Accounts Committee: 2015 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 20 - Garda Síochána - Internal Audit Report on Garda College, Templemore
(4 May 2017)

Marc MacSharry: In terms of the Vote of €1.503 billion in 2015 - it is a bit higher now - is the Government saying to An Garda Síochána that when it gets the job done with the 200 or 300 people, it will give it resources to recruit the required professional staff? Has the Commissioner been given that undertaking?

It will be sent to the Garda Commissioner today. The current question is not related to that documentation at all.

Public Accounts Committee: 2019 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 24 - Justice and Equality
(9 Dec 2020)

Marc MacSharry: I understand that. We do not want the reviewer to judge it, but if an external reviewer had a term of reference to exclude that, it might prevent the Department from referring that to An Garda Síochána after the fact, which is actually a condition of the Act. Is that not the case?

Marc MacSharry: ...all else, real leadership is required. In this context, I agree with Senator Quinn and others, in that I hope the Taoiseach and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform have sent for the Garda Commissioner this morning. Marc MacSharry: On Senator Pat O'Neill's point about the Garda Commissioner, while on a personal level I wish her well and hope she will do a good job, Senator Mark Daly was perfectly within his rights to make a legitimate point. It is a fact that the person in question was deputy commissioner when many of these issues came to light. That is worth noting and remembering.
