Seanad: Water Services Bill 2014: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2014)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: If we do not discuss the amendments, we are not doing our duty. If we do not discuss them, we will not do our duty. How can we do our duty properly if we are placed in the position of having to continue to debate these issues until 4 a.m., 5 a.m. or 6 a.m.? Many people will ask about Senators' judgment at that time of the morning. We can stay until the early hours and feel patriotic about...

Seanad: Water Services Bill 2014: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2014)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: We would be much better off continuing the debate on Monday and, if necessary, take Report Stage on Tuesday.

Seanad: Water Services Bill 2014: Committee Stage (19 Dec 2014)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Senator Healy Eames has been very proactive on this legislation. She has put a good deal of work into her amendments and they are thoughtful. From my perspective they are rather helpful, in particular, the amendment currently tabled because most of the debate on Second Stage and throughout today was on the question of conservation. Since all the meters are not in place there is no way of...

Seanad: HSE National Service Plan 2015: Statements (20 Jan 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Go raibh maith agat. Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. We are dealing with an area that is probably more complex and more multifaceted than any other aspect of life. We are faced with two choices. Do we continue managing crises or do we have fundamental reform? Do we need to reform not only the health system but the HSE itself? I think we must revisit it. I compliment the Minister. He...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jan 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: On several occasions over the past number of years I raised here in the House a case of what I regarded as a grave miscarriage of justice. It is now 74 years since Tipperary man Harry Gleeson was hanged for a crime which he always claimed he did not commit. He was defended at the time by the late Minister Seán McBride. His community strongly believed as well that he did not commit...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: The bomb attack on the office of Deputy Michelle Mulherin is a very worrying and sinister development. It could easily have resulted in loss of life or very serious injury. It is not just an attack on the office of a Member of this Parliament, but an attack on the Oireachtas and on everybody in public life. It is also an affront to democracy. This country has a proud record of respect for...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (28 Jan 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Tá an-áthas orm go bhfuil an seans agam labhairt anseo inniu. Nuair a chuaigh John Carty ar shlí na fírinne, d'fhág sé folúntas ina dhiaidh nach líonfar riamh. Ba dhuine macánta, dílis agus díograiseach é a sheas an fód i gcónaí ar son a phrionsabal agus ar son a mhuintir freisin. I am very pleased that John's...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Feb 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: It is to the eternal credit of the Irish people that in spite of the very severe austerity measures we have had, they have not resorted to anti-social behaviour which, as we have seen, is so damaging in other countries. There is certainly no justification for the manner in which the Tánaiste was treated, which was quite despicable, and certainly no justification for the manner in which...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Feb 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Chun cur leis an méid atá ráite ag an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, beidh tuarascáil an chomhcoiste maidir leis an nGaeilge á sheoladh an tseachtain seo chugainn. Bheadh sé an-oiriúnach dá mbeadh seans againn é sin a phlé le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge. Regarding the point made by Senator Ó Clochartaigh, I understand that the...

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Anois, táimid ag dul ar aghaidh go dtí an chéad ábhar eile. Is é sin, ar chóir an aois vótála a ísliú go dtí 16 bliana d'aois? Táimid ag tosnú le Hannah Nic Dhiarmada, Meánscoil San Nioclás, Rinn Ua gCuanach.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Ceisteanna Óige: Díospóireacht (3 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Muna bhfuil aon rud eile le rá ar an ábhar seo rachaimid ar aghaidh go dtí an chéad ábhar eile. An bhfuil sibh sásta go bhfuil an cheist seo clúdaithe go maith? Tá. Ábhar an-thábhachtach go deo atá á phlé an t-am seo, meabhairshláinte na n-óg a chosaint. An chéad chainteoir a bheidh againn ná...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Ceisteanna Óige: Díospóireacht (3 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: Mar a tharlaíonn, tá an fheadóg séidte agus tá an t-am istigh, ach tá seans go mbeidh athimirt againn uair éigin eile. Bhí na cainteoirí ar fad ar fheabhas agus bhí ardchaighdeán Gaeilge ag gach duine acu. Tá muid go mór faoi chomaoin acu. Bhí an Ghaeilge ar fheabhas acu, ach lasmuigh de sin, bhí na tuairimí a...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: I move amendment No. 1: In page 3, to delete line 26 and substitute the following:“(a) the provision of health services without charge as outlined in section 2 of the Health (Amendment) Act 1996,”.Fianna Fáil supports this Bill. The intention of our amendments is to provide clarity in regard to specifics within the legislation. The amendment we are putting forward is in...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: This amendment is motivated by our concern for the survivors of the Magdalen laundries. As we know, they have suffered a lot and travelled a long road to justice. They met many roadblocks and obstacles on the way. It is vital that we allay their fears. They do not seem to be happy with the current Bill, which was our motivation in looking for clarity, not just in the Chamber but in the Bill.

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: It is clear that there are concerns on both sides of the House. I presume the Minister has met with the representatives of the survivors of the Magdalen laundries, and I presume they have asked the same questions. The Minister might tell us if he had such a meeting with those representatives because if he gave the same answers, why is there such doubt and concern among the survivors in this...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: This is no ordinary case. We know the history and background and we know the length of time it has taken to reach this destination. I am sure the Minister of State will reply in a moment and I asked if he has met the representatives of those who expect to benefit from the Bill and has given them the same answers. Senators Ó Clochartaigh and Norris have both put points for...

Seanad: Establishment of Electoral Commission: Motion (4 Mar 2015)

Labhrás Ó Murchú: There is no doubt but that our sovereignty and democracy were hard won. People feel very passionate about that democracy. Since democracy is underpinned by an electoral process, individuals have a sense of ownership of it. All the questions and cautions posed by the Minister during the course of his address are a given. The ordinary citizen would pose the same questions and cautions....
