Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Maritime Safety (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: With the deepest respect, that reply does not do anything for us. Literally, we have no pathway and no ability to remove these wrecks that are littering our coastline. There is one at Ballycotton that is there since 2020. It is split in two at this stage and will probably be in four by the time I put down my next Commencement matter, and we will still be going nowhere. There is one in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I welcome the witnesses. I will start with my principal argument. Mr. Carlin made a very interesting statement about the biodiversity element and he said he thinks it is going to go to 50:50 in due course because of national policy. National policy is proposing 450,000 ha between now and 2050, which is roughly 15,000 ha per year. We are now building timber frame houses at anything up to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: It is 2050.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I think that was in the published strategy.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: On the land use issues, peatland is one issue and there are potential derogation issues regarding nitrates and more land being required for our bovine herd. These are huge issues. Mr. Carlin mentioned that the price of land has escalated over the last few years and it is only going to go one way, which is to go up dramatically. The land is not being made again and we have what we have; we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: It is a challenge to produce enough timber that is going to work a market in 30 years' time, given where current planting levels are at the moment. We are planting just over 2,000 ha a year. If there was a split of 50:50 based on that, in 30 years' time we would be importing the majority if not all of our timber for our construction firms.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I am very much aware of that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: What I am trying to get is an opinion from the representatives of Coillte, as a major stakeholder in the market, on what the national policy is, and whether that will be enough to ensure that we have enough timber for our market in 30 years' time.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I would hate to think that that message would go out but we should be concerned about the mix going in at the moment. My concern is that in 30 years' time, that mix will not have delivered for the market. That is my primary argument.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: This is my last question because I know we are under pressure for time. Coillte has a considerable portfolio of properties at its disposal. There is a part of the world close to my home called Ballymartle woods. We previously discussed the proposed sale of the woods in December and Coillte informed me that the proposal to sell the woods had been paused. Can the witnesses provide me with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forest Policy and Strategy (Resumed): Discussion (1 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: Ms Hurley might correspond with me on that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Services and Supports Provided by the State for Autistic People: Discussion (2 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I acknowledge the Chair's work. His nine months of work and dedication put in place a passionate committee that has done much good work. I acknowledge that. I also acknowledge the parents and advocates who came here today and put forward an amazing case about what is needed and what changes are required to ensure we have a system that is fit for purpose. It is obvious it is not fit for...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Disability Services (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: The Minister of State is more than welcome. I am delighted to see her here because this Commencement matter was directed to the Department of Health. There ensued a series of emails informing me that this function moved to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth on 1 March 2023. Lo and behold, we were told this morning that the issue is going to the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Disability Services (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I thank the Minister of State for her comprehensive response. It is clear the scheme is not fit for purpose, as she acknowledged. It is about making sure we get a scheme in place to meet the needs of the people I represent, such as the man in Bandon to whom I referred, who are housebound other than when the community steps in out of goodwill, as well as those who lost limbs in an accident...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I just want to follow on from Senator Dooley's statement. It is a very interesting point. There is a cohort of Irish women in Irish society who are, unfortunately, on non-contributory pensions because of the way society acted. It is logical that this matter should be looked at. I could mention many people who came into my office who never met the criteria and do not have the ability to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I remind members, witnesses and anybody in the Public Gallery to turn off their mobile telephones. All persons present are asked to take personal responsibility for themselves and others in regard to the risk of contracting Covid-19. Today's meeting will consist of two sessions. The first is to discuss the development of the sheep sector and the second will be a discussion on the timber...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I thank Mr. Comiskey. I call Mr. Cross.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: Excuse me, I understand Mr. Cullinan has to leave so I would ask him to come in at this stage.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Development of Sheep Sector: Discussion (8 Mar 2023)

Tim Lombard: I will ask Mr. Crosse to finish the point. I am sorry to have interrupted.
