Terry Leyden: I once again welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Deputy Michael Ahern, to the House and thank him for piloting the Bill through it today. I also thank his staff, who have assisted him in that important work. I would like to refer back to the Irish Financial Services Centre in Dublin. At the time, I was a member of the Fianna Fáil Front Bench,...
- Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Second Stage. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: For example, the Opposition could introduce a Bill to establish a development corporation for the River Shannon, thereby creating many jobs. It would be worthwhile to research this policy area and to propose ideas for future development. The River Shannon is not being properly exploited. We need to build on the fantastic success of the global funds sector. The Investment Funds, Companies and...

- Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Second Stage. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: Its fundamental goal is to ensure continuity, consistency and reliability in the governance of this country. It has an abundance of good Ministers and Ministers of State at present, including the Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ahern, who is an accountant. Terry Leyden: The Fine Gael Party's rip-off Ireland campaign has not been a great success either. Will the Leader invite the Minister for Finance to the House to discuss the price of fuel because it has a direct effect on the economy, especially with inflation and the strength of the euro vis-Ã-vis the dollar, which is the price in which oil is quoted. It would be worthwhile to go through in detail the...

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I commend him and his staff on the amendments they have proposed. The co-operative movement, particularly the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society, has been seeking an increase in the current limits on co-operative shares for some time. The proposed new limits should meet the development needs of the co-operative movement for some years to...

Terry Leyden: In light of the advance of e-commerce it seems the following wording is old-fashioned, "An offering document prepared for a local offer shall contain the following statements in print in clearly legible type". Would it be possible for that to be downloaded from the Internet? This would remove the need for all of this paperwork and could perhaps be provided for on Report Stage.
- Seanad: Investment Funds, Companies and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2005: Committee and Remaining Stages. (26 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister of State and his officials for their attention to this Bill. The Minister of State has a great record in bringing legislation before this House. It was a very technical Bill, but it was necessary to comply with European regulations. The Minister of State has received tremendous support from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. I received such support myself...

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader consider arranging a debate in the near future on our current energy policy? The official opening takes place today of a wind farm in Meentycat, County Donegal â Senator McHugh probably knows the exact location â of a significant development by Dr. Eddie O'Connor and Airtricity.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: It is a great success story which is supplying power to 45,000 houses and will save on the release of 200,000 tonnes of carbon monoxide.
