Seanad: Budget Statement 2006: Motion (6 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: The mechanism chosen by the Minister to address the problem, increasing mortgage interest relief, is a good one. I hope my comments have not caused my party colleague, the Minister of State, Deputy Parlon, to leave the House, although I am pleased my constituency colleague, the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Seán Power, has arrived to protect me. The cost...

Seanad: Budget Statement 2006: Motion (6 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: I am prepared to defend the measure on that basis. The outcome of the study on vehicle registration tax and taxation on CO2 emissions will be interesting. I bet some of the sports utility vehicles, SUVs, will emerge well from the review because most of them are diesel vehicles. We keep comparing them with five litre and six litre petrol vehicles used in the United States.

John Dardis: I must put up with an expert engineer who does not know what he is talking about.

Seanad: Budget Statement 2006: Motion (6 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: The measures on the business expansion scheme are appropriate, as is ensuring alternative energy production is supported through agriculture. The amount of money per hectare the European Union gives farmers was not sufficient to encourage farmers to grow alternative energy crops but the introduction of an additional payment of €80 per hectare will deliver significant progress in this area....

John Dardis: They just adopt them, but do not implement them. There is a difference.

Seanad: European Communities Bill 2006: Second Stage (7 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Treacy, and his officials to the House. I readily accept the need for this Bill. I do not have a problem with that, as the matter needs to be regularised. Some important court judgments are relevant in this regard. I would like to ask some questions which are similar to those which were posed by Senator Quinn, although I will not go as far as he did...

Seanad: European Communities Bill 2006: Second Stage (7 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: There is a message in that for the people who draw up EU regulations. I thank the Minister of State for his remarks about the Sub-Committee on European Scrutiny. It is noticeable that many of the documents which are referred to the sub-committee are extremely difficult to understand. I do not refer to the complexity of the issues, but to the nature of the language that is used. Given that...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (13 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: I am delighted on behalf of the Progressive Democrats to join the other groups in paying tribute to Andy O'Brien and to extend our sympathy to his wife, extended family and his Fine Gael colleagues. His many achievements have been well documented by previous speakers. The thread that links these remarkable achievements was a life of unparalleled service to his community, county, province...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: The Minister for Health and Children would welcome the opportunity to come to the House to discuss her recent proposals. She has always been available to come to the House to discuss any matter in which she is involved. It is a misrepresentation and is scaremongering to suggest that people will have to sell their homes.

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Dec 2006)

John Dardis: The initiative is precisely to prevent that.
