- Seanad: Order of Business. (24 Mar 2005)
Terry Leyden: I draw the Leader's attention to the Health (Amendment) Act passed here on 10 March and signed by the President on 11 March in accordance with an earlier signature motion. The Irish Medical Organisation has vetoed this Act. Must we have a health warning when we pass a Bill here "subject to the approval of the IMO"? A total of 200,000 people will qualify for medical cards under this...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I am glad the Leader has put a debate on Gama on the agenda for tomorrow. Deputy Joe Higgins does not have a monopoly on concern for workers in this country.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: What is involved here is the exploitation of Turkish workers by Turkish firms, not by Irish employers. Furthermore, the permits should be given to the applicants, not the employers. This is where the difficulty arises. I hope the Department will publish the report tomorrow with the support of this House and that the courts will not suppress the truth. The courts are interfering with the...
- Seanad: Expressions of Sympathy on the Death of His Holiness, Pope John Paul II: Motion. (12 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: We all should feel inadequate when speaking about this great man. Pope John Paul II was a real spiritual leader who had a most spiritual death. I went to the Phoenix Park to that great event in 1979 where I met Seán McBride. I also saw Oliver J. Flanagan in all his finery. He went on to Knock to meet the Pope there, which was the centre of his visit to Ireland. John Paul II was born on 18...
- Seanad: Health Service Reform. (12 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Brian Lenihan, for coming to the House to respond to the matter I am raising on the Adjournment. I ask the Minister of State to implement sections 41 to 44 of the Health Act 2004, which was signed into law on 17 December 2004. I would like him to outline details of the establishment of the consultative forum in this regard. I would also be interested to...
- Seanad: Health Service Reform. (12 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister of State for his reply and welcome the decision to implement the legislation. I urge that this be introduced as soon as possible because it is vital for local democracy.

- Seanad: Rights of Migrant Workers: Statements. (13 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: He was a brave man to go out there.
- Seanad: Rights of Migrant Workers: Statements. (13 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I compliment the Minister, Deputy Martin, on his speedy response to this crisis. I thank him for his comprehensive speech and for his hands-on approach to this issue. He has been in contact with the bank in the Netherlands and our ambassador is dealing with the matter. One point which has not been made clear is that the Gama organisation is Turkish owned. In this case Turkish employers are...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I add my voice in support of the call for a full debate on the health service. It is becoming a type of pantomime when one has Joe Duffy and Ben Dunne trying to solve the problems of the health service. It is beyond belief.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: A new accident and emergency unit in Roscommon cost â¬8 million. The cost of staffing it is â¬2.5 million but nobody has yet been recruited. There was a protest in this regard outside the hospital last Tuesday. The real problem is a question of capacity. There may be a need for temporary buildings to be erected at hospitals for the capacity problems to be solved, but this should not apply...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: I asked the Leader of the House about this matter before the Easter recess and we got into a big row about accident and emergency services in Roscommon. There is something very wrong in the state of Denmark. There is something wrong with the whole system and it should be solved but it will not be solved on "Liveline" by Joe Duffy and Ben Dunne.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: It will be solved by the Minister and the Government. Since the change to the new Health Service Executive I find there is a lack of responsibility on the ground compared to when the health boards were in existence.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Apr 2005)
Terry Leyden: It is just publicity.
