Public Accounts Committee: 2018 Annual Report of the Accounts of the Public Services
Chapter 9 - Greenhouse Gas-Related Financial Transactions: Discussion
(5 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Let us suppose that transparency is lacking. There is a ring-fenced fund of €410 million, but it will be more than €500 million next year. Is it fair to say that if this revenue was to be used to fund a retrofit scheme or a pay-as-you-save scheme ,it would have a different effect from using it as part of general taxation?

Public Accounts Committee: 2018 Annual Report of the Accounts of the Public Services
Chapter 9 - Greenhouse Gas-Related Financial Transactions: Discussion
(5 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I do not see the UN sustainable development goals mentioned. Does the policy reflect those goals and take account of poorer people? My understanding was that an acknowledgement of the need to do this was built into the system in order that carbon taxation would not be punitive. Is that a fair representation?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Affecting the Quality of Water: Discussion (5 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I live in Leixlip and we have always had our water supplied by the Fingal treatment plant. It has been expanded to provide water to other locations in recent years as it has been augmented. I do not remember there ever being a boil water notice at that plant. This is the first time and it has happened twice in a few weeks. What is different about Leixlip in terms of the Liffey is that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Affecting the Quality of Water: Discussion (5 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: The presentation today referred to inconvenience and disruption but that language does not meet what people are feeling. There have been two boil water notices in quick succession, having been none previously, and people are really afraid, worrying whether it is safe to drink their water. The tone of the witnesses needs to reflect the fact that there is real fear about the quality and...

Catherine Murphy: On the risk assessment, given the number of people involved here and what Mr. O'Leary has described in terms of downstream of the river source, is this the most at risk water supply?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: Discussion (6 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I, Deputy Shortall and a number of Social Democrat councillors met the NTA last week to exchange views. When I asked the representatives of the NTA where they got the information to inform the decision, they told me it was the census. I appreciate that the census is very general and there is a large volume of information. However, look at the questions on the census. They are not very...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: Discussion (6 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I represent an area on the periphery of the network. Leixlip, Celbridge and Maynooth between them have a population of in excess of 50,000, which will have sizeable new communities as new estates are under construction and there are much more to come. We are in what is described as the commuter belt. We want to keep people in the commuter belt out of their cars and provide them with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: BusConnects: Discussion (6 Nov 2019)

Catherine Murphy: To come back to a couple of points, would Mr. Creegan address the issue of the peak hours? What if the witnesses are wrong? Where is the capacity and what is the speed of capacity to amend? I am a great believer in people being pretty decent at deciding what is good for them and I tend to listen to people, because they are full of sense. When one hears a whole bunch of people telling one...
