Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: One-Parent Family Payment: Discussion (18 Feb 2015)

Marie Moloney: I wish to address a couple of matters. I am of the firm belief that nobody should be better off unemployed than working, yet it appears that is the case. On the one hand the Department recognises the importance of having a parent in the home until the age of 12 by awarding a homemaker’s credit to a parent who chooses to be at home to look after the children, but, on the other, we say...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Second Stage (24 Feb 2015)

Marie Moloney: I also welcome the Minister of State to the House to discuss this very important Bill. The purpose of the Bill is to provide health services without charge to women who were resident in the Magdalen laundries and other similar institutions. We must take into consideration the age of some of the Magdalen women and the urgency attached to dealing with issues related to them. These women have...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Higher and Further Education Grants: Discussion (25 Feb 2015)

Marie Moloney: From the beginning I was one of the biggest critics of SUSI. Everything was going wrong; documents were constantly being lost and everything was topsy-turvy. I commend the body for the improvements and strides it has made. I have not received a complaint about its operations for some time. There has, therefore, been a vast improvement. In the event of a student’s mother...

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (4 Mar 2015)

Marie Moloney: From my inquiries, I have found that the HAA card for hepatitis C sufferers is limited to the reimbursement list except for a very limited number of drugs which are specific to hepatitis C. That is the only thing hepatitis C sufferers get with the HAA card and these would not be relevant to the Magdalen laundries women.

Seanad: Redress for Women Resident in Certain Institutions Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (4 Mar 2015)

Marie Moloney: I, too, commend the work of Justice for Magdalenes group. I know from speaking to the Minister of State that he and Justice for Magdalenes want what is best for the women. People have been getting hung up, as it were, on a HAA card. The HAA card was introduced under the Health (Amendment) Act specifically for people with hepatitis C. The only difference, as already outlined, is that...

The legislation is very detailed and comprehensive and I note how many other pieces of...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Mar 2015)

Marie Moloney: I add my voice to those who have welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Jan O'Sullivan, yesterday on people with Down's syndrome. That is something I never agreed with from the very beginning and many of my colleagues felt the same. We always felt what happened was unjust and wrong. That is the reason we have continually lobbied the Minister to make...
