Helen McEntee: Improving access to Child and Adolescent Mental Health services, including maximising placements in age-appropriate acute units, are priorities for improvement under the HSE Service Plan 2017. Additional resources over recent years mean that we now have 67 CAMHS teams, and 3 Paediatric Liason Teams, supported by 66 operational CAMHS beds across the country. A lack of funding for the...

Questions on Promised Legislation (8 Mar 2017)

Helen McEntee: Yes. In respect of A Vision for Change, we have implemented almost 80% of the recommended positions, that is, more than 8.500 staff. Several other positions have been approved but we are having difficulty filling the vacancies. With regard to Jigsaw, five more will open this year and there will be a new process for other counties to put themselves forward to open Jigsaw services too.

Other Questions: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Helen McEntee: I thank the Deputy for raising this issue. As the Deputy is aware, the child and adolescent mental health services in Cork have eight community-based teams. This requires eight consultant positions as well as nursing staff, occupational therapists, social workers and other posts. The Deputy is well aware that two of the consultant positions have been vacant for some time....

Other Questions: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Helen McEntee: I thank both Deputies. We face two difficulties. One is the recruitment in respect of the consultant posts. Unfortunately, there is a very high turnover in our mental health services, particularly in the child and adolescent mental health services. As it is high-intensity work, it can be very challenging so people tend to move on more quickly than they might elsewhere. Another difficulty...

Other Questions: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Helen McEntee: I will take the Deputy's comments on board. As far as I am aware, where there are supports available through the private sector an arrangement is agreed between the HSE and those private consultants or centres. The problem is that we are all fishing from the same pool. If one has an arrangement with a private organisation, the organisation might well be able to pay the person more than we...

Deputy Thomas Byrne will be aware that County Meath has received over €300 million in funding in the past few years to...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Mental Health Services Provision (8 Mar 2017)

Helen McEntee: A Vision for Changerecognises a ‘pivotal role’ for primary care in providing mental health services. The policy assigns a key role to GPs for access to specialist mental health services. GPs can detect and diagnose mental health difficulties and either treat the individual or refer him/her to other professionals within primary care or to specialist services, based on...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Helen McEntee: The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services/CAMHS is a specialist mental health service for children and young people. Referrals are accepted for those under the age of 18 where the severity and complexity of the presenting mental health disorder is such that treatment at primary care service level is unlikely to be unsuccessful. The service provides assessment and treatment through a...

Helen McEntee: In 2015, the Government launched Connecting for Life, Ireland's National Strategy to Reduce Suicide with the aim of reducing suicide and self-harm over 2015-2020.
