- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hedgerows, Carbon and Biodiversity: Hedgerows Ireland (9 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: Is that potential based on new hedgerows or rehabilitating existing hedgerows?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hedgerows, Carbon and Biodiversity: Hedgerows Ireland (9 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: We have an ambitious target for 2030, which is not that far away. There is huge value and potential in hedgerows but we are trying to get to net zero by 2050, so there is a 30-year challenge. It seems that however difficult the 2030 challenge might be with growing new hedgerows, sequestration and so on, we should be taking the 30-year potential very seriously.

Brian Leddin: Indeed.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Hedgerows, Carbon and Biodiversity: Hedgerows Ireland (9 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: That is good to hear. We may bring Hedgerows Ireland before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action at some point to speak further about it. Others may speak on how hedgerows enhance practices on the farm. What we are trying to solve here in many ways is a real challenge for farmers throughout the country. We know many of them are struggling. We think there is an...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Draft Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan 2023-2027: Discussion (9 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: I welcome the witnesses who are on site and those who are joining us online. It is good to have them here. On organics, I was very happy to hear my colleague Deputy Martin Browne raise that issue. I note the scheme was opened to farmers today. Let us hope there is a good uptake. All members of this committee are in agreement that we are good at what we do in Ireland in agriculture....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Draft Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan 2023-2027: Discussion (9 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: The following question is to all of the witnesses. Is the door still open on CAP? As I understand it, it is very much in the political space now. Is that correct? Is it the case that if we are clear enough in what we are looking for and are loud enough, we can influence that political decision that would be coming from Europe?

- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Climate Change Policy (16 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: We are here today not just to talk about the Salthill cycleway. The decision in Galway on Monday night is the catalyst for a discussion on how we can achieve our climate ambitions. We are here to talk about a fundamental challenge we face. In the past 18 months, I have been privileged to chair the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action. We shepherded generational...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Climate Change Policy (16 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: I thank the Minister of State. I welcome the Minister of State's comments on the climate action regional offices. I must add, however, that climate action is urgent and there are projects in the pipeline now, such as the one in Salthill, that amount to climate action and which we need to take very seriously. We have a national policy that prioritises sustainable transport and mobility...
- Mobility and Transport Supports for People with Disabilities: Motion [Private Members] (16 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: I reject the personalised attack on the Minister of State by my fellow countyman earlier. This kind of populist politics is reprehensible and has no place in the House. I welcome the Minister of State's ongoing focus on, commitment to and prioritisation of inclusive transport for people with disabilities and we are fortunate to have her working on this portfolio. I welcome this motion...
- National Retrofitting Scheme: Statements (17 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: I want to address the reasons as to why this retrofitting programme is so important. Why do we want to do this? There are many reasons. We want Irish people to live in warmer, healthier and more comfortable homes. In the context of health, asthma symptoms are reduced in warmer homes. Mould conditions increase the severity of asthma and retrofitting, particularly the ventilation aspect,...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Commission for Regulation of Utilities Strategic Plan: Discussion (15 Feb 2022)
Brian Leddin: There were other questions around the CRU's role in advising Government. There was a question around the remit and, I suppose, balancing the various remits of the CRU as well, and the models that it is using in doing so.
