Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Special Needs Provision in Second Level Schools: SNPA, NCSE and NAPD (18 Nov 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Although this is not my area, it is in the very good hands of Ms Maher who is an extraordinary advocate because it comes from her well, in that she has her own beautiful son. Senator Mary Moran was saying the same. One understands it only because one has walked in the shoes. Somebody like Ms Maher can make such a difference to other people's lives, as Senator Mary Moran pointed out. Ms...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Special Needs Provision in Second Level Schools: SNPA, NCSE and NAPD (18 Nov 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: This has a tenuous link with what Mr. Byrne is saying, but last weekend I happened to be in the west when Robert Fisk was speaking. I accept almost all of what the Minister of State is saying but is there a reason we did not get her notes beforehand?

Section 8 sets out the guiding principles, inherent in which is the minimisation of the restrictions on relevant persons. The principles include respect for the right to dignity, bodily integrity, privacy, autonomy and...

Seanad: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (9 Dec 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Unfortunately, I am not speaking to the others. This is the only amendment in my name and it is the only one to which I am speaking.

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is sitting there as it were.

Seanad: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (9 Dec 2015)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I take Senator Craughwell's point. I am making a more general argument about the way we are "processing" older people and that is the word for it in the sense that we will not consider having the fair deal scheme applying to the home in the same way that it operates in care settings but it would be helpful if could start there. In the Senator's case, it was not a practical option for his...
