- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: I am glad the Minister said that the legislation will be introduced in this House. May I suggest that when the Minister makes the scheme available for discussion, it would be worthwhile to have a debate on it, as distinct from the legislation, in both Houses?
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: We could be allowed to make statements when the scheme is published. A large amount of common sense is talked in this House about the whole area of drink.
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: Much more common sense is spoken by Senators than by many of the external lobby groups. Having listened to debates in the House over the years, I have formed the view that Senators are reasonably sensible about the matter most of the time. It would be worthwhile to get the views of the Houses of the Oireachtas, as well as the 40,000 lobby groups outside the Oireachtas, before the legislation...

- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: I would be the first to say "I told you so" to the Minister if I had told him so, but none of us told him so.
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: I genuinely believe, as I said before, that we should not be here. I compliment the Minister on his speedy response, but if every Bill was interpreted in the way the 2003 Act was interpreted, the Oireachtas would spend most of its time writing clarifications to clarifications to clarifications.
- Seanad: Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: Common sense has to apply at some stage.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Motion (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: Both as a Member of the Oireachtas and as a Kildare man, I would like to associate myself with the welcoming remarks. I have known Deputy Seán Power for many years. Our fathers were acquaintances, to put it mildly, in Fianna Fáil circles in County Kildare, so he is particularly welcome. With all the nuances of politics, I wish him well in his ministerial office. He is more than capable of...

- Seanad: Medical Cards: Motion (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: We are very helpful.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Motion (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: I welcome many aspects of the debate. It appears that everybody agrees there is something wrong with our primary health care system. I do not think I heard a single instance of dissent from that view. The trouble is that we knew, because it is well documented, that a good primary health care system is the essential prerequisite for a good hospital care system and a good health care system for...
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Motion (13 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: That is a cooker. That is about 60% more than the GP would have cost. I have had the great benefit of not having to have a GP visit the house in many years, since the children were small. I presume that it is now about â¬60 for a house visit. That is still 40% less than they were going to charge me to have someone stand inside the door to look at my cooker. Let us not blame the GPs for...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (14 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: I agree with Members on the apparent recurring crisis at Crumlin hospital. It is rich of the Tánaiste to tell the Opposition not to play politics with the issue. Does that mean we should not mention it? It is our moral and political obligation to raise such issues and endeavour to find a solution. I compliment the Tánaiste and the Progressive Democrats on sorting out Fianna Fáil on the...

Brendan Ryan: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Oct 2004)
Brendan Ryan: Regarding the unfortunate circumstances in Iraq and the kidnapping of a fine, brave woman, it is ironic that she was able to work freely in Iraq for the past 35 years without suffering anything like what she is suffering now. We all deplore it. I agree with Senator O'Toole that if people in western countries preach from a position of moral superiority, morality must be indivisible. The...

Brendan Ryan: The Senator means the Fianna Fáil republican party bit-ââ
