Other Questions: Health Promotion (12 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I thank and compliment the Minister of State, Deputy Griffin, for his work. When we think of obesity, people straightaway refer to the Mars bar and the bag of Tayto. However, much is also down to non-participation in physical activities. Physical education is a good way of getting our youth up to standard in the education system in respect of physical co-ordination and other aspects of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ and DAA: Chairpersons Designate (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I welcome Ms Ross. It is my first time to meet a chairperson from the group. I do not believe Ms Vivienne Jupp came before the committee. From the information Ms Ross has given us, she is a competent person for the job and I hope she brings a bit of positivity to the position. To go back to what Deputy Troy said, does Ms Ross feel her position is compromised as she was on the NTA for a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ and DAA: Chairpersons Designate (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: One of the concerns I have is with regard to expressway routes. As a result of the competition issue with the EU we could lose some express routes if we allow private operators to take them over.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ and DAA: Chairpersons Designate (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I welcome the appointment of Mr. Geoghegan. I wonder how he, as a man in his prime and with his curriculum vitae, can find time to take on this role. I doubt that the paycheck compares to wages he received in previous employment given his expertise. Does he have enough time for the role? He will be under significant public scrutiny. I acknowledge the significant role played by the DAA...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: CIÉ and DAA: Chairpersons Designate (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: When Norwegian Airline was trying to get its transatlantic licence, was Cork used as a carrot given Norwegian was operating on a low-cost initiative? It seemed to be doing tremendous business out of Dublin. Was Cork used as a carrot to lobby the officials in Washington to grant the licence? It dragged out for a while. Any time one reads anything in the press it talks about the necessity...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I do not think the witness will get an easy offer from Mr. O'Leary. I welcome the opportunity to listen to the deliberations and I thank the people for coming in and taking time out to attend. This is being broadcast live and there are plenty of people watching us at the moment. We have had these discussions over the last few months with the various interest groups and we welcome the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: With regard to private operator access, I have concerns there. As recently as a month ago, I had parents of a child in a wheelchair whose class went off to Clare on a school trip. The child in the wheelchair could not go because there was no access facilitation for the wheelchair which was annoying.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: I thank Mr. Delaney. Mr. O'Leary is attacking the local authorities, but the local authorities only provide the planning and the permits if the works need to be done. It is like blaming local authorities if there is a water leak. Just because something is located on public property one blames the county councils. I know where he is coming from and in fairness I was a member of a local...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Discussion (Resumed) (13 Jun 2018)

Kevin O'Keeffe: The good news is that hopefully we are making progress in making public and private transport more accessible to people with disabilities. I commend Ms Hill on her initiative and I hope it will spread down south - from my own political background that is how I will put it. Get the word out there; I thank the witnesses and wish them the best of luck.
