Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

Pat O'Neill: No. The decision has to be taken in the other House yet. We do not know what way the vote is going to go. This is a correct decision for Aer Lingus and for the country. We are a small island nation and connectivity to mainland Europe, the UK and the US is one of the most important things we have. The Government's decision to sell its share in Aer Lingus and the takeover by IAG of the Aer...

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

Pat O'Neill: That was part of a tourism package the Government put together, bringing in the 9% VAT rate and dropping the travel tax which Fianna Fáil imposed-----

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

Pat O'Neill: We have been given commitments on connectivity and the Heathrow slots from IAG. Those slots are the most important part of the Aer Lingus package, as Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe. They give us connectivity to the rest of the world. The vision is that rather than Heathrow being used as a hub for the north Atlantic, Dublin and Shannon Airports will be part of the overall view of...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: We, as a nation, often have a lot to be proud of. I would like the Leader and maybe you, a Chathaoirligh, to write a letter to the Minister for Defence congratulating our Defence Forces on the magnificent humanitarian job they are doing in the Mediterranean Sea at present. The Naval Service has saved over 1,000 people. We had debate here on the crisis in the Middle East recently and I think...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: I thank our guests for coming before us and sharing their expertise. This is an emotive issue and it is the use of the word "modified" that frightens people. Genetics have been use for some time in the context of the development of crops and animals. In the context of human health, superbugs have emerged against which existing antibiotics are useless. As a result, new antibiotics have had...

Pat O'Neill: How long have these products been trialled by the agency?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: I wished to ask a question to which the Chair also has been trying to get the answer. While I am aware that it is in consultation with the Department of Health, as Mr. Ryan mentioned the Minister for Health, and the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government also appears to be involved, who actually decides on Irish policy? Is it the Minister on the day and in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: It is a ministerial process. Mr. Ryan was unable to set out a timescale. The process could take one year or five years. When the Ministers reach their decision, will the matter have to be referred back to the European Parliament?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: Has the Parliament commenced its process?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: The process will have commenced in the Parliament when the Ministers decided their position. The two groups will engage in tandem, although I cannot see them ever coming to agreement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (9 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is taking the lead on this matter. After next Wednesday, 16 June when the Ministers meet, could the officials give us an update on the policy and what way it will look from the perspective of each member state? It would help us in our work.

Seanad: Children (Amendment) Bill 2015: Report and Final Stages (10 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: On behalf of the Fine Gael group I congratulate the Minister on getting the Bill passed in the Seanad. I hope it has an easy passage through the Lower House. On behalf of Senator Henry, our spokesperson on children, who cannot be here today, I compliment the Minister again. This is an important Bill and there was a lot of passion expressed in the debate on it. The Minister accepted some...

Pat O'Neill: I welcome Deputy Noel Grealish and his friends to the House. Deputy Grealish was recently crowned the winner of the Oireachtas captain's prize.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: I wish to be associated with the expressions of sympathy extended by the Leader and previous speakers to the families of the young Irish students who were tragically killed in California this morning. As someone with a son on a J1 visa in California, it was especially shocking to hear the news. I welcome the letter issued by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government,...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: No.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Data and Genomics Programme: Discussion (16 Jun 2015)

Pat O'Neill: I thank Mr. Gleeson for his presentation. Most of the issues I wished to comment on have already been raised. We started on the wrong foot with this scheme. People thought it was a suckler cow scheme. We must remind people that it is an environment scheme and is equivalent to schemes such as REPS, AEOS or GLAS. That is the message behind the scheme and why there is a six-year tie-in.
