- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Greyhound Racing Industry: Discussion (20 Oct 2015)
Pat Deering: There are a number of questions to be answered. With regard to asset disposal, we have heard much about Harold's Cross but I have not heard anybody refer to trying to eliminate the serious debt of €22.4 million, which is a substantial amount. I am at a loss to know why no one has come up with an alternative way to find funding or a suggestion as to how this issue will be resolved....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Greyhound Racing Industry: Discussion (20 Oct 2015)
Pat Deering: We have heard a great deal of talk about the lack of communication and there is no doubt that it is a diverse group. Everybody wants to go forward in the same direction but, in the context of the introduction of legislation in the future, would it help if a statutory process were put in place? Would it assist the engagement process if GOBAs throughout the country were part of a statutory...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry: Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (3 Nov 2015)
Pat Deering: I welcome the ICMSA delegation. This is all about cashflow as far as I can see and we are in a perfect storm with price reductions. The superlevy for this year and the next three years for those who are in that situation has caused and will continue to cause that particular difficulty. There are 18,000 milk producers in the country. Will the witnesses give the committee a breakdown of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry: Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (3 Nov 2015)
Pat Deering: Mr. Comer mentioned the beef forum. The dairy forum is also up and running. Mr. Enright made a valuable contribution regarding tools that could be used in future. Is there any value in the dairy forum making suggestions and do the witnesses find it beneficial? It has only been up and running for a while. When dealing with farmers, nothing beats talking to them and the industry. ...

Pat Deering: I welcome the witnesses. The two presentations we heard cover a broad spectrum of activity which probably covers all livestock. The delegates from Macra na Feirme mainly focused on dairying, which, for reasons that are easy to understand, has been quite attractive to younger farmers in recent years. I listened with interest to a recent media interview with a former IFA chairman who has...
