Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Overview of Operations of the National Lottery: Discussion (7 Mar 2017)

Michael McGrath: Are the witnesses satisfied with allowing more games to be approved, retail outlets and online activity in terms of lottery gambling to take place? Do they have any remit to control that overall, given the potential societal impact?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Overview of Operations of the National Lottery: Discussion (7 Mar 2017)

Michael McGrath: My observation is that over the past number years, especially under the new operator, the number of games, platforms and distribution channels has grown significantly. They are everywhere, which has consequences for society. It is constantly in people's faces. Gambling can destroy people's lives – not necessarily this type of gambling, but more generally.

Other Questions: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Michael McGrath: I wish to raise with the Minister of State, Deputy McEntee, the question of child and adolescent mental health services. I realise there is a serious issue nationally. I am raising the question especially in the context of Cork city and county, where several vacancies have arisen in critical staff positions. This is now having a direct impact on the waiting lists and the ability of...

Other Questions: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Michael McGrath: I respect what the Minister of State has said. I have no doubt the HSE is trying to recruit consultants not only for Cork but throughout the country. However, it is not working, unfortunately. I do not have the answer for the Minister of State in respect of how to solve this. The HSE is going to have to prioritise this issue. This is having a serious impact on the people who need to...

Other Questions: Mental Health Services Staff (8 Mar 2017)

Michael McGrath: It is true that they are seen relatively quickly to deal with the immediate crisis but the services they need to deal with the underlying issue are simply not being provided. It is not just about consultant posts. The CAMHS across Cork and Kerry currently have 84 posts, but 170 were recommended in A Vision for Change. It is 50% of the recommended level of staffing resources for CAMHS in...

National Educational Psychological Service: Motion [Private Members] (8 Mar 2017)

Michael McGrath: I commend Deputy Thomas Byrne on introducing this motion on behalf of Fianna Fáil. I would like to focus on the entry point for children, for which the Department of Health and the HSE, rather than the Department of Education and Skills, is strictly responsible. The lack of real integration between the health and education authorities in dealing with special needs is part of the...
