Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: If it was a small geographical area, could that place limits on the product being produced, for instance, if it is limited to a geographical area that is named and mapped? Am I also right in saying that mapping comes into this?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: It checks for objections.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: How long does that process take? It seems to be quite involved.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: Which is what? Could it be five years?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I will come back to Mr. O'Connor in the few minutes I have left. He indicated a clash between the trademark that is held by Fiskar and the GI patent, if you want to call it that, which he is looking at for Waterford. Could he delve into that a little bit further? It seems to me to be leading down to somewhere kind of like the four goldmines whereby there could be a lot of litigation around...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: That brings us to how disputes like this could be adjudicated and resolved and enforced, in fact.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: That brings me to one final question to do with the fact that this is a European Union regulation. How does that impact on the UK and countries outside the EU? Is any similar arrangement possible in respect of those areas?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I thank Mr. Kennedy. That is me done for the moment, Chairman.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Postal Services (15 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Ceann Comhairle's office for selecting this issue and the Minister for being present to address the matter. On 27 June, the Minister will recall that I raised during Question Time the issue of publicity post at An Post and the way it was being administered. The Leas-Cheann Comhairle may be aware that there are many zones around the country, but I suspect they were constructed...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Postal Services (15 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Minister for his response and his candidness. I think he is getting the same response I got. "None of your business," is what they say, in so many words. They are getting a lot of money. An Post is a great organisation and I agree it is doing great things. It has done great things with e-cards and so on and was marvellous during Covid. This, however, is the one area I think...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I have raised this issue on a number of occasions. Since 2016, a boil water notice has been in place in west Cork, affecting 9,000 customers. To buy bottled water costs between €500 and €1,000 per annum per household, when water should be free. It will be another two years before this issue will be resolved. I understand the UK is introducing a compensation scheme when this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I have a final question. Ms Blanchfield mentioned the costs involved. I am interested in exploring that a little. I am thinking of the smaller producers, for instance, that Ms Palmer is championing so well. What is involved in preparing an application? What must be done in proving the link to show something is unique to an area and defend it from objections? There may be objections from...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: It seems a lot of these craft producers do not have much margin to play with, as the witnesses suggested. I have seen figures of between €5,000 and €10,000 involved in this.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I understand that producers from outside the European Union can avail of this regulation under EU law, such that their area, whether in Africa, the US or wherever, can be recognised in Europe. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I come from a town, Midleton, where a lot of whiskey is made, so I am pleased to hear that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Geographical Indications for Craft and Industrial Products: Discussion (16 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: Donegal Tweed has been mentioned once or twice. What is the situation with respect to that product? I know it.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Defence Forces (17 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: 9. To ask the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence to outline the organisational structure of the Reserve Defence Force, RDF, including its geographical spread and strength in respective locations; his future plans for the further development of the RDF; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [41892/24]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Defence Forces (17 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I ask the Tánaiste to comment on the situation regarding the Reserve Defence Force. In most other jurisdictions, reserve defence forces take a very prominent role and, in some instances, are far larger than the permanent defence forces, and they are used in a very proactive way by the jurisdictions they are located in. I am concerned about the future of the RDF here and I would like to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Defence Forces (17 Oct 2024)

David Stanton: I thank the Tánaiste for that comprehensive response. I hope the number will increase. I understand there was a time when the number in the RDF, formerly the FCA, was approximately 20,000. That was the situation when I was a member up to 1997, before I came in here and was told my services were no longer required. Will the Tánaiste comment on the situation regarding the tax-free...
